2 CAUTION  Trekking is a risky activity  All outdoor activities come with its share of risk  Risks in trekking include, insect bites, slippery rock, drowning, getting lost in the wild, falling stones from a water all, sprains, fatigue, cramps, snake bits etc.

3 Safety  Your safety is YOUR responsibility  Stay with the group  Watch your buddy  Get the right gear  Follow instructions  Be alert, aware and STAY ALIVE  Drink enough water  Watch the rock  Check the depth of water bodies  Be sensitive to anything on your skin

4 Gear…?  No slippers, No heels! (Gosh no!)  Wear shoes with rubber soles, avoid PVC soles / FLOATERS and Sandals are good too.  Wear comfortable clothing  Carry a bag that will GO ON THE SHOULDER  Keep hands free, you need it for balance  Rain wear, NO UMBRELLAS  Quick dry clothes if available

5 Learn the hand signs  Learn the hand signs from Trek leaders and support crew for  Briefing Full circle, half circle, look there, look here, you are being watched, faster, slower, stop, come in 2’s, stay down, volume low, silent…RUN

6 Nutrition  Have a good breakfast  Bananas are a good source of energy  Carry chocolate bars or dry fruits and nuts  2 liters of water per person on the trek!  Carry dry lunch, do not bring oily / wet lunch. Dry lunch is good to carry and to digest  Adding lime to water bottles or glucose is a good instant source of energy.

7 Trek tips  Walk at a CONSTANT pace. This will give you more energy  Deep breathing! Take full long deep breaths. This helps your body get more oxygen! Crucial for a trek  Stay in the “here and the now” enjoy being amidst nature. See and be with nature.  Good sleep before the trek is very essential.  Keep your body hydrated by drinking little sips of water every 20 minutes…

8 Trek etiquette  Be alert  Talk in a hushed tone. Be with nature  LNT – LEAVE NOT TRACE  Do not pluck any flowers, break any branches, eat any berries.  Stay attentive to trek leaders “Radio Communication”  Stay alert to hand signs and pass them on to the rest of the group  Stay with the group  Be responsible for your BUDDY.

9 The goal of the trek?  To BE with NATURE  To BE with your SELF  To appreciate GODS creations.  To take time out  To feel the rain, to touch the green, to go DEEP.  To smell the flowers, to love to world.  To EXPERIENCE and LEARN to manage treks for students.

10 Trek leadership  Samson – TREK LEADER  Vaishali – AST TREK LEADER  Find out who the TREK CREW is…  YOU are your buddy’s leader.

11 Trek operations  Usually SINGLE FILE in 2’s (BUDDY PAIRS)  Medium pace  Walkies and radio operators will be at regular intervals  First aid with Trek Leader or in the center  Start at the base. Do not break group.

12 Specific Briefs for 18th trek  Each person to make a TREK MAP. (Build observation and navigation skills)  During the trek we will have a session on KNOT MAKING  During the trek we will have a session on TENT PITCHING  During the trek there will be sheets of “READING MATERAIL” on outdoor survival.
