(Domain Name System) Ismael Ali Technology Context Chi

A evolutionary system that has been implemented into society. Allows communication & interaction through the world wide web. Individuals have their own IP address, which is used through the internet service provider. IP address consists of, E.g. (218.75.143.231) row of numbers that every person that has a computer, and is connected to the internet is allocated. What is the DNS?

Domain Name Space A structure based on a family tree that represents the foundations of the DNS. The unnamed root being the foundations of all DNS operations. From the unnamed root Top Level Domains (TLD) follow that consist of 6 domains, e.g. org, com, gov etc. Users access these as they are the most popular and widely used names. Each node holds a domain name that can have their own nodes sprouting out of them. What are the Three Crucial Components in The DNS?

Domain Name Server Containing zones that can only be updated by primary servers(top level domain). The primary server takes all the workload that is given from the user. A secondary(sub level domain) server is applied to reduce the primary servers workload. Whilst browsing the web, the servers build up cache data intern increasing the speed of the browser as the previous websites visited have been stored for quicker access.

Resolver The resolver is a software that every host has that also provides a default server for each host. The resolvers job is basically to help the user when the search doesn’t find results. It does this by first accessing a default server to resolve the IP address that needs attention. If this doesn’t work out then it queries the root service that provides a list of names that contain data from TLD. This is known as a referral.

The simplest way I could describe the DNS is that its like a phonebook. It holds a vast amount of domain names ( contacts). The way it works is, the user looks up website (name) to find their IP address ( phone number). When connecting to the server there is a waiting time for the reply (calling). This is basically how the DNS works by searching for the website through the IP address then waiting for the server to allow access. Describe The Function Of The DNS ?

How Does The DNS Affect Legislation In The UK ? As far as the UK is concerned there is no present legislation that affects the operation on domain names. The domain name is not the subject of legislation as the governing body, (national trademark law) which is governed by the public agencies are business based. Evidently the legislation of the domain names does not affect the UK as it will have no apparent impact on it.

Within the DNS there are a number of limitations that do uphold a concern with the system but the most significant limitation would have to be that the current DNS system still has the IP version 4 integrated that permits roughly 3-4 billion users. In order to improve on this an IP version 6 has been introduced to withhold roughly 6-9 billion users. This limitation has a big impact in todays society as there is a large number of individuals that do not yet have access to these resources, so it is a great new system to integrate into the web. What Limitations Affect The DNS?

The DNS plays a crucial part in every ones lives as far as the public is concerned. It has brought round a revolution to the majority. It has a user friendly interface where the user can simply just type their desired search topic and instantly they are granted to view and do what they wish. This has improved the due to the rapid growth in technology, where theoretically the new system can be expanded to allow even more individuals to access and indulge in the web. Conclusion
