Bammel Elementary Library Handbook for Teachers The one and only way to use your library in a very efficient manner.

Library Hours Library hours for students are from 9:00 until 4:00 each day. Since the library is a part of the Specials rotation, we prefer that students visit the library during their scheduled time. If there is a need to use the TIMs computers in the library, the classroom teacher needs to let the library know what students (limit of 3) are coming and what they will be working on while in the library. This needs to be independent work, as there will be no one to help them one on one.

Library hours for faculty and staff are from 9:00 until 4:00. Library staff are at school during these hours if not earlier and later. There is an “After Hours Check-out” form available for teacher use if no library staff is available. You simply note your barcode numbers and leave the sheet for library staff to input the next day.

After Hours Check-Out Please list the barcodes of all items you are checking out, titles are not necessary. Place in the bottom tray for library personnel to enter the next day. Thank you.

Library Check-Out Procedures Students in Kindergarten and First Grade are allowed to check out one book each library visit. Second Grade will be using the Easy Section the first six weeks of school. After appropriate library lessons have been taught, they will be given the option of checking out a “chapter” book. They will use the guidelines of: five finger rule and a book with 100 pages or less. They are always given the option of going back to the Easy Section. They, too, will only check out one book at a time.

Third through Fifth grades will be able to check out two books at a time. One book MUST be a Fiction book for homework reading. The other book can be one of their choice. Two Fiction books can be checked out if the student wishes to do so.

Bluebonnet Books are available for students in Third, Fourth and Fifth Grades. These make wonderful read aloud titles for your class. Students should hear/read five of these titles by January 31, 2009 in order to vote for their favorite title.

For our Fifth Grade students, there are 10 books selected for them by the librarians of Spring SISD for the Battle of the Books program. Once again, these make great read aloud titles. These students will be tested over these books in February, with teams formed by raw scores and the competition will begin. The winning team will go onto the district competition in April.

Teachers may request books for units of instruction with the book request form. Appropriate titles will be pulled by library staff for classroom use. If it is a grade level unit, they will be checked out to the level and placed in the Team Leader’s room for team use. Please allow 48 hours for us to pull these titles for you since the library is a part of the Specials Rotation Schedule. If more than one grade level is studying a particular topic, books will be pulled and placed on a reserve shelf in the library for all to choose from (i.e.. Read Across America).

Student books will be returned on their library day. A box will be placed in your room for collection. We would appreciate it if you would send the box in as soon as possible in the morning for check in and reshelving. The portable buildings and the upper levels will receive their box on a cart due to the number of books that they will be checking out.

Equipment Available for Check-Out All equipment will be checked out with a check-out sheet given to each teacher. There is a place for the librarian to make a note of which kind of bulb your projector uses, you do not have to fill this out.

Overhead projectors Projectors are available for check-out with a cart by each teacher. Primary teachers may also want to check out a projector for Station use. If you do not wish to use a cart, it can be returned to the library for check-in. Returning teachers should have kept their acetate roll last spring. New teachers will be issued a roll to go with their machine.

Tape Recorders Tape recorders are available for check- out for use in a listening station. They do not tape well unless you use a hand held microphone. Microphones can be purchased at Radio Shack for recording purposes.

Headphones A standard set of four headphones will be issued with each tape recorder.

Extension cords and cord covers are available through the library as well.

Technology Other technology available through the library are 8 Aver-Visions, 6 Digital Cameras, 17 Smart Boards, 4 sets of e-Clickers, 3 external floppy drives, 1 digital video camera, VCRs and Powerlight projectors and 2 carts.

Equipment Repair Also, if any equipment has a problem, please send it back to the library as soon as possible so a work order can be sent in to our Audio Visual Repair center.

Destiny Our current Follett library program is called Destiny. This will be the second year for it to be in use. It can be accessed from the classroom by both students and teachers. As you look for items in the card catalog on-line you can create a Booklist. At the end of your search you can print out that Booklist and bring it to the library to use to find your titles. The catalog will also indicate whether or not a book is checked in or out and the number of copies in our library holdings. Most of the time, you will do a Subject Search.

Teachers can view the state standards for any area of the curriculum as well. On the Catalog Screen, click on State Standards on the left hand side of the screen. Select your level, then grade. You will be give a list of books that are found in our library that match that particular grade level TEK. 1 Listening / speaking / purposes. The student listens attentively and engages actively in a variety of oral language experiences.1 Listening / speaking / purposes. 21 Lexile Levels You can also search for titles by Lexile Level. There is a poster on the wall in the library with Lexile Levels for each grade level. Type in a subject you are looking for. Go down to pull down arrow after Search Reading Programs. Select Lexile Level. Put in your Lexile Range and Choose a Reading Level. This will give you a list of books with the appropriate Lexile Level.

Teaching Books Found on NAL screen of your computer, this program is paid for by the district. A very valuable tool for the Language Arts teacher. Streaming videos of authors talking about their art and writing processes. Author appearances, book guides, book readings, thematic booklists, book awards and valuable links. Worth checking out when you are doing novels in Guided Reading. Some of the author talks are nice to use for rainy day recess.

The website is www.unitedstreaming.com. The passcode for Bammel Elementary is 8322-9258. Teachers need to go the website and register in order to use these videos. You will find entries from United Streaming included in your curriculum guides. They also address state standards which accompany the videos.

Book Fairs Each year we have two Book Fairs. At this time, I am using Scholastic Book Fairs. I plan to have one in December to coincide with Winter Holidays Celebrations and one in the spring to coincide with our primary evening reading program. Teachers do get a 10% discount and no tax on all purchases.
