* -Define imperialism (textbook) * -You have been named King/Queen of Holly Springs (make believe country). You need to expand your empire and make your kingdom larger. You can add any city or state to your kingdom. Who do you take over? And, why?

* policy by a stronger nation to attempt to create an empire by dominating weaker nations economically, politically, culturally, or militarily. * Opposed the acquisition of colonies by the US * Americans didn’t want to pay more taxes to support imperialism * Felt it violated the ideals & spirit of democracy

Growth of Imperialism Economic Factors Militaristic Factors Nationalistic Factors Humanitarian Factors

* America had created an industrial economy * Workers and farmers helped convince business and political leaders that the US must secure new markets abroad. * Henry Cabot Lodge (imperialist) wanted US to gain colonies abroad * Colonies provided for raw materials & new markets for US industries

* Many thought America was losing its strength * “Worried that the closing of the frontier would sap the nation’s energy, they argued that a quest for an empire might restore the country’s pioneer spirit.” * Would show other nations how strong the US had become & raise US influence around the world

* Alfred T. Mahan -argued that the nation’s economic future depended on gaining new markets abroad -US needed a powerful navy to protect these markets from foreign rivals * Naval Advisory Board -established in 1881 -Board pushed to increase Navy’s budget. Began to build cruisers and battleships. * By 1900, the US had one of the most powerful navies in the world.

* Americans were superior over the societies that they conquered. * The Americans believed that expansionism was the nation’s destiny and pursuit to spread Christianity & modern civilization * Believed the idea that people NEEDED our help

* Americans eventually accepted Imperialism. They did want new MARKETS ABROAD and favorable TRADE RELATIONS. * They soon discovered that political and military entanglements followed this expansionism. * US would find itself in difficult and painful foreign conflicts.
