3 Rhyme Scheme and Meter

4 rhyme scheme A rhyme scheme is the pattern of rhyme between lines of a poem or song. It is usually referred to by using letters to indicate which lines rhyme; lines designated with the same letter all rhyme with each other, regardless of their position in the poem. In other words, it is the pattern of end rhymes or lines.poemsonglettersrhyme

6 scansion is the analysis of the rhyme and meter of a poem. It should tie into the poem’s overall meaning.

7 Meter is the pattern of beats or accents of the syllables. Unstressed = u Stressed = /

8 Metric Foot It is the basic building block of poetry. It makes up the pattern of syllables. Usually involves one stressed syllable and one or more unstressed syllables (exceptions exist). The pattern of feet create the meter of a poem.

9 iamb (iambic) An unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable Forget (“for” is unstressed, the emphasis is on “get”) Deceive (“de” is unstressed, the emphasis is on “ceive”) The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls. u/u/u/u/

15 The Line The poetic line is measured by the number of feet it contains.

22 So what is “iambic pentameter”? The “iambic” part tells us the pattern. Unstressed syllables followed by stressed syllables. The “pentameter” part tells us how many iambs will be in the line. Penta means five, so five iambs of two syllables each for a total of 10 syllables.
