2. Retreat on forced academisation - a tactical victory! The White Paper - our immediate response made the difference: Demonstrations across the country - organised by NUT members Over 150,000 people sign the two e-petitions against forced academisation Opposition from across the political spectrum – Conservative councillors as well as Labour and Liberal Democrats Conservative MPs speak out against the proposals in Parliament Nicky Morgan backs down on 5 May

What the climb down means Mass forced academisation abandoned Plan to force all schools to become academies abandoned - good & outstanding schools in good local authorities will not be forced to change status Rural schools offered protection against closure as well Three U-turns in one month This follows the scrapping of baseline and on SPaG Key Stage 1 tests as well Government policy is weakened while we are strengthened: let’s press home the advantage

That’s why the NUT is pressing ahead with our ballot for strike action Ballot opens Monday 23 May Ballot closes Wednesday 22 June Intention is to call a one-day strike in July and announce additional autumn term strike dates as well We need a big turnout and a huge YES vote It is important that all members understand what we are doing, why we are doing it and when we are doing it.

6. The threat to pay & conditions Things are already getting worse Pay progression is falling in schools and academies Academies are making changes to working time and other matters The imminent STRB report may break up the STPCD pay structure even further The NUT is seeking negotiated national pay & conditions that apply in all schools & academies Academies aren’t bound by national pay & conditions Most academies still follow them - but as their number increases, how long will this last?

7. What could we lose? The STPCD gives us: a national pay structure for all schools rights to pay progression limits on working days and directed time rights to PPA time protection against cover and administrative tasks All of this could in future be decided at individual academy or multi-academy trust level The Burgundy Book and local agreements give us: rights to sick pay and maternity pay above the legal minimum current notice periods current rights to leave of absence, paternity & adoption leave & pay etc

8. Why funding makes it worse Funding cuts for schools and academies Freezing funding per pupil and higher NI & pension costs will cut the value of funding by 10% or more by 2020 The proposed "national funding formula" goes further - it will actually take money away from around half of all schools Funding pressures already threaten pay increases and pay progression in schools and academies alike The NUT is seeking full funding, not just “fair funding” Without more money and the protection of national pay & conditions, things will get worse much faster for teachers and children.

The rest of Morgan’s ‘reform’ programme remains Replacing QTS with “on the job” training Removing the requirement for elected parent governors in schools “Being a parent is not a skill set needed to be a governor.” - Nicky Morgan Continuing the exam factory culture and narrowing of the curriculum

10. Stand Up for Education Teachers stood up; parents stood up; MPs stood up; Councillors stood up….even the Institute of Directors and CBI stood up for education! The NUT is continuing to seek to build a broad alliance to campaign against the Government’s proposals on education and other issues We will continue to: lobby MPs and organising local and national protests ask councils to pass a model motion against the governments proposals talking to parents and local politicians to get their support

11. What NUT reps need to do Hold a school meeting to explain the campaign and build the ballot Work with colleagues to ensure every NUT member votes – we need the biggest possible turnout Recruit non-members to the NUT Volunteer for the phone bank to call members in schools without reps and encourage colleagues to do likewise With colleagues, speak to parents and carers and circulate the NUT leaflet – and approach local councillors about supporting the NUT model motion
