2 GPON Access Introduction This topic describes the definition and purpose of GPON access. Definition An x passive optical network (xPON) is a point-to-multipoint (P2MP) passive optical network. A typical xPON access system consists of three parts: - Optical line terminal (OLT) - Optical network unit (ONU) or optical network termination (ONT) - Optical distribution network (ODN) An ODN (including fibers and optical splitters) connects the OLT and the ONU/ONT.

3 GPON Access Purpose GPON adopts the passive optical transmission technology and is mainly applicable to the scenarios, such as fiber to the home (FTTH) and fiber to the building (FTTB) to provide various services: Voice Data Video Leased line Distributed service GPON supports high-bandwidth transmissions. This helps to break down the bandwidth bottleneck of the access over twisted pair cables and to meet the requirements for high-bandwidth services, such as high-definition TV (HDTV) and live programs. GPON supports long-reach access, which helps to extend the coverage and to reduce network nodes

12 System principle GPON adopts the WDM transmission over an optical fiber. In compliance with ITU-T G.984.2, the upstream wavelength is 1310 nm, and the downstream wavelength is 1490 nm, which are used for bi-directional data transmissions over an optical fiber between the OLT and the ONUs/ONTs ,to separate the signals of different users at both directions over the same optical fiber, the following multiplexing technologies are adopted: The broadcast technology is adopted for downstream data stream. Each ONU/ONT receives only the data which belongs to it. The transmission rate is 2.4 Gbit/s. The TDMA technology is adopted for upstream data stream. Each ONU/ONT sends its data within the allocated timeslots. The transmission rate is 1.2 Gbit/s.

13 Principle A GPON consists of the physical layer, the TC framing sub-layer, and the TC encapsulation adaptation layer. When functioning as an OLT, the MA5603T is connected to the ONU/ONT in the downstream direction. The GPON encapsulation mode (GEM) frames are transmitted between the OLT and the ONU/ONT. A GEM frame is identified by the GEM port ID, and is carried by T-CONT in the upstream direction Figure 1 GPON multiplexing structure (GEM mode)

14 Principle DBA-profile Function
This command is used to add a dynamic bandwidth assignment (DBA) profile. In the DBA profile, the upstream access bandwidth of the ONU is defined. The MA5600T dynamically adjusts the upstream access bandwidth allocated to the ONU according to the upstream access bandwidth requirements of the ONU. In this manner, the usage efficiency of the upstream access bandwidth of the PON system is improved. When the default DBA profile cannot meet the service requirements, run this command to add a DBA profile according to the service requirements. The default DBA profiles can be queried or modified, but cannot be deleted. If a profile is bound to a service, the profile cannot be deleted. Priorities of different bandwidth types are different. When allocating the bandwidth, the board allocates the fixed bandwidth and then the assured bandwidth. In this manner, the two bandwidth types are assured. If there is still bandwidths remaining, the remaining bandwidths are allocated to other bandwidth types. The value of the bandwidth you entered when adding the DBA profile will be adjusted downward to an integer multiple of 64. For example, if the entered bandwidth value is 1022 kbit/s, the actual bandwidth will be 960 kbit/s.

15 Principle DBA-profile Function Link
By default, there are nine DBA profiles in the system with IDs ranging from 1 to 9. These profiles provide the typical traffic parameter values. For parameters in the nine DBA profiles, see the following figure. You can also run the display dba-profile command to query the parameters in each profile. The DBA profiles used in the EPON mode and in the GPON mode are the same. A DBA profile can be bound to the EPON port and GPON port at the same time.

16 Principle

17 Principle Assume that: Profile ID: 20
Profile name: dba_15M (that is, dba_assured bandwidth) Bandwidth type: Type3 Assumed bandwidth: 15 Mbit/s Maximum bandwidth: 30 Mbit/s To add such a DBA profile for a VoIP service so that the MA5600T dynamically adjusts the bandwidth allocated to the service according to the upstream burst service requirements of the ONU, do as follows:

18 Principle GEM Port A T-CONT comprises one or more GEM ports. Each GEM port carries one type of service stream. Thus, one T-CONT can carry one or more types of service streams. Each GEM port is identified by a unique Port-ID. The Port-ID ranges from 0 to 1023 and is globally allocated by the OLT. That is, each GEM port can be used by only one ONU/ONT connected to the OLT. The GEM port is used to identify the service port that carries the service stream between the OLT and the ONU/ONT. It is similar to the VPI/VCI of the ATM connection.

20 Activation in GPON The activation process in GPON is controlled by the OLT. The ONU responds to the messages sent by the OLT. The activation process is as follows: According to the requirement of the OLT, the ONU adjusts the level of the transmit optical power. The OLT discovers the SN (Serial Number) of a new ONU. The OLT allocates an ONU-ID to the ONU. The OLT measures the phase of the upstream data transmitted by the ONU. The OLT informs the ONU of the compensation delay. The ONU adjusts the transmit phase as informed of.

22 GPON Terminal Working principle of the OMCI
GPON terminal management refers to configuration and management of optical network Control terminals (ONTs) on the GPON optical line terminal (OLT) through the ONT Management and Interface (OMCI). The OMCI is a master-slave management protocol. The MA5603T is the master and the ONT is the slave. The MA5603T controls multiple ONTs through the OMCCs. PLOAM refers to Physical Layer OAM. The PLOAM message includes such information as the serial number and password of the ONT for authentication. Operations, Administration and Maintenance (OAM) function the OMCC is established between the MA5603T and the ONT as follows: After the power-on, the ONT sends the Serial_Number_ONT PLOAM messages to the MA5603T to complete the registration. From the received PLOAM messages, the MA5603T knows whether the ONT supports the OMCI protocol channel. The OMCC can be established between the MA5603T and the ONT only when the ONT also supports the OMCI protocol channel. Through the OMCC, the MA5603T sends the configuration and management messages to the ONT. Through the OMCC, the ONT reports the status and alarm messages to the MA5603T.

The voice, data, and video services are provided through a single optical fiber. FTTB/FTTC indicates fiber to the building/fiber to the curb. The MDU is connected to the OLT in the PON mode to implement FTTB/FTTC, and provides voice, data, and video services for the users in communities. FTTO indicates fiber to the office. The SBU is connected to the OLT in the PON mode to implement FTTO. In this way, the Intranet TDM PBX, Intranet IP PBX, and Intranet private line services are provided. FTTM indicates fiber to the mobile base station. The CBU is connected to the OLT in the PON mode to implement base station backhaul. P2P indicates point to point. 28 Configuring the FTTH Service
The OLT is connected to the remote ONT through a GPON port to provide users with the highspeed Internet access service. Service Requirements The user PC is connected to the ONT through the LAN port in the PPPoE dialing mode. The ONT is connected to the OLT and then to the upper-layer network in the GPON mode to provide the high-speed Internet access service. The high-speed Internet access service is identified by two precisely-bound VLAN tags. On the ONT, each user is allocated with a CVLAN; on the OLT, each slot is allocated with an SVLAN. The high-speed Internet access service adopts a bandwidth-ensured mode with the maximum bandwidth 100 Mbit/s as the DBA profile.

29 Configuring the FTTH Service
Dataplan Prerequisite The OLT is connected to the BRAS. Related configurations are performed on the BRAS according to the authentication and accounting requirements for dialup users The VLAN of the LAN switch port connected to the OLT is the same as the upstream VLAN of the OLT.
