Design Reservoir Water- Management Data Model By: Adel M. Abdallah Instructors: David Rosenberg and Dr. Jeff Horsburgh Oct. 16, 2012 Hydroinformatics, 6930 Term Project Interim Oral Presentation

Problem Project objectives Methods Progress and further work Conclusions Presentation outline

Selected Water Management Models Problem WEAPSWATHEC-ResSim Water evaluation and planning System (commercial) Simulates water demand, supply, flows, and storage, and pollution generation, treatment and discharge. Evaluates a full range of water development and management options, and takes account of multiple and competing uses of water systems Water evaluation and planning System (Public) Quantifies the impact of land management practices in large, complex watersheds. Predicts impacts of weather, soils, land use and land management on water supplies and pollution as well as soil erosion, fertility and crop production. Reservoir system simulation (Public) Test and recommend reservoir release policies and operations to meet current and future water demands while meeting downstream regulations like minimum environmental flows

Reservoir representation in water management models HEC-ResSim WEAP SWAT Arc Hydro Flood Conservation Inactive

Models’s Semantics to represent the watershed components SWAT Arc Hydro Basin (highest level) a set of administratively chosen drainage areas that partition a region for purposes of water resources Management Watersheds subdivision of a basin into drainage areas selected for a particular hydrologic purpose Catchment Elementary drainage areas defined by a consistent set of physical rules. Watershed (highest level) Delineated using DEM Sub-basin or sub-watershed For areas that are dominated by land uses or soils dissimilar enough in properties to impact hydrology Hydrologic Response Units further discretization using land use and soil type considerations

Design a conceptual data model to represent reservoirs in water management models (WEAP, HEC- ResSim, SWAT, and Arc-Hydro) Organize and deliver reservoir data to water resources models above for Weber River Basin Project Objectives:

List data requirements for each model (entities, attributes, and temporal and spatial representation) Develop a relational data model for each water management model Design relational a data model that organize and deliver reservoir data to water resources models above for Weber River Basin Methods

Listed data requirement for WEAP. HEC-ResSim to come. Developed a rough relational data models the models Focus on the reservoir data requirements Design the relational data model that can transform reservoir data to the selected models Progress and further work

Water management models represent reservoirs with different levels of attribute details Water management models use different semantics for the same entities or attributes Relational data model would help to transform and deliver reservoir water management data to different models Conclusions
