Technical solution to a technical problem Intellectual property title Granted for 20 years max The patent’s owner can prevent people from making a commercial use of the patented technology EXEPT IF A LICENCE IS SIGNED (royalties … for owner (university) + inventors) but everyone has the right to use the patented technology for internal research purpose only

19 www.universite-lyon.fr/lst 1/ Novelty The invention is new if it has not been disclosed before the filing of the patent application. Abstracts, posters, publications, conferences Training course reports, Master or doctorate thesis, Thesis defence (except in case of private audience) Meetings, TV, radio 2/Inventiveness / Non-obviousness An expert/engineer must not be able to obviously deduce the invention from the state-of-the-art. 3/Industrial application The invention must find at least one application in a technological domain. Patentability criteria

20 www.universite-lyon.fr/lst Summary of IP good practices Do not disclose the content of the invention PRIOR to the patent : this would destroy its novelty. A non-disclosure agreement (NDA) is essential before meeting any partner (industrial or commercial). Publication is possible AFTER the patent Don’t hesitate to contact LST if you have any question about patent, software, IP in general, SATT and call for proposals !
