15 Mary Ainsworth Attachment Theories
Ambivalent Attachment Formed ambivalent attachment to mother due to her constantly not being there and leaving him with any care giver whether they were stable or not within their own relationships. When older mother would state she would visit him when made ‘Ward of the Court’’ and placed within Institutions, but rarely kept her promises. With first marriage wife divorced him while incarcerated after short Time. Later had multiple partners through commune, not forming any real Personal relationships except that of ‘Supreme Leader/Messiah’ Relationship whereby he continually needed proof he was in control.

16 Psychosocial Development
1616 Erikson Psychosocial Development 0-1year Trust v Mistrust Mother consistently leaving Manson while young with other people due to this develops no trust as nothing is predictable especially his mother as she is also unstable emotionally as she is an alcoholic. Any one he loved left him. Never trusted anyone when older 1 – 3 years Autonomy v Shame and Doubt Manson whenever he had doubt as an Adult would use violence and anger as a way in which to hit back at society, as he never learned this when he was young due to the inconsistency in his early childhood.

17 Psychosocial Development
Erikson Psychosocial Development 3-5 Years Initiative v Guilt. Nothing in Manson’s earlier life was consistent with being continually moved around when a child and in his teenage years. There was no one in his formative years in which to teach him or to be a role model. Has developed guilt due to care givers he was left with not praising him when required and being ridiculed for being a bastard even at this age. 6-12 Years Industry vs Inferiority Charles Manson was ridiculed for being born a bastard at school and by most adults within a small community. While at uncles was made to feel inferior due to his crying for his mother so sends him to Sunday school in a dress where he was humiliated and taught that he was beneath other due to his status.

18 Psychosocial Development
Erikson Psychosocial Development Adolescence Identity v Role Confusion When Manson was institutionalised hung around older and tougher peers following their examples to protect himself by imitating them including sexualised behaviours. Due to his being institutionalised at a young age h doesn’t have sex with a female until late teens due to being in a variety of homes and sexually abused by others see’s no wrong in having sex with males with or without their consent. Sees rape of males with and without the confines of being enclosed as part of life and can see no wrong. Young Adulthood Intimacy v Isolation Believed he was just like Jesus both victimised and misunderstood so thinks of himself an equal to Jesus and starts to twist different religions to fit with his own beliefs. Manson’s way of being intimate was to have sex with anyone and everyone that way keeping his emotions neutralised.

19 Psychosocial Development
Erikson Psychosocial Development Middle Adulthood Generatively v Stagnation Manson is still self absorbed believing himself to be the victim in life and feeling no remorse for the murders that he committed. Late Adulthood Integrity Versus Despair The only despair that Manson feels is that he didn’t commit enough murders and that he wasn’t recognised for his music.

20 Freud’s Mental Iceberg
Manson has never achieved the Preconscious or Conscious Level of the iceberg, remaining in the unconscious level. Manson’s needs are still violent and selfish today blaming others for the way he is. Asking young members of the family to commit murders to prove their devotion to him and by also getting young girls in the commune to perform sexual favours to himself and any person he deemed acceptable/.

25 Forty-one years after he inspired the Helter Skelter slaughter of actress Sharon Tate and seven others, there is little that is recognizable of Charles Manson except the swastika he carved into his forehead and his ice cold stare. This photo was taken March 18, 2009 in the California State Prison, Corcoran, where Manson, now 75, is serving his life sentence in the protective housing unit where he plays guitar and still gets mail.
