3. Reminder: Adding a prefix to the beginning of a root word creates a new word. Prefix + = New Word

4. Today we’re going to introduce two very common prefixes: pre- and post-.

5. Definitions: Pre- to be before or in advance of something Post- to be after, following, or behind something -Now let’s take a look at some examples of what these prefixes can and can’t do!

6. Example #1: Root: Test We took a pretest at the start of the week to see which words on our new spelling list would require studying. After studying for a week, the class took the posttest for the spelling unit. In this example, both prefixes can be attached to the same root to create a new word. This will not always be the case.

7. Example #2: Root: Cook Hot dog manufacturers precook their products before shipping them to supermarkets. The word precook will likely make sense to most of you since you probably know from experience that hotdogs are already cooked before you throw them on a grill. Postcook, on the other hand, probably just sounds funny. For some reason, our language has evolved in a way that postcook has never become a “real” word even though logic would say that it should mean almost the same thing as reheat.

8. Understanding prefixes can help get you pointed in the right direction toward figuring out the meanings of unfamiliar words. Of course, you’ll probably need to have repeated exposure to most words before they become a part of your vocabulary.
