Emphasis on e-portfolios also as a tool for documenting lifelong learning, competencies and to move between different stages of education.

Europortfolio October 27 and 28, 2005 European Schoolnet Scenario tool The use of portfolio is described in a narrative form Questions such as “how is the portfolio used by the learner?”, “who are the other stakeholders and what are the expected outcomes of the portfolio?” General description format to give a uniform look and vocabulary for different cases

Europortfolio October 27 and 28, 2005 European Schoolnet Scenario tool: common structure General description of the case study Different perspectives, or scenarios –These perspectives will be elaborated to tell the same story from different stakeholders’ point of view – what do they benefit and gain from using the portfolio

Europortfolio October 27 and 28, 2005 European Schoolnet Scenario tool: Different perspectives

Europortfolio October 27 and 28, 2005 European Schoolnet The Norwegian Portfolio Imperative Portfolio Imperative Within 2008 digital portfolio assessment should be in use at all levels of the educational system in Norway

Europortfolio October 27 and 28, 2005 European Schoolnet No: Case study results Students: portfolios give feedback from real users, hypertextual, collective, “dialogueish” – and labour intensive Teachers: + new form of collegiality, time consuming, still easy to fall back to summative assessment Policy level: legal issues, privacy, ownership of the portfolio Technical: Open vs. password protected ePortfolios

Europortfolio October 27 and 28, 2005 European Schoolnet The European Language Portfolio (ELP) In Catalonia Small group of primary teachers –Phase I: Training –Phase II: Integrating ELP in their classroom activities –Phase III: Actual piloting Expected outcome: Guide for teachers

Europortfolio October 27 and 28, 2005 European Schoolnet 14 Lessons learned Tasks - linked to the different parts of the ELP Portfolios - new forms of collegiality among teachers The ELP components - used in relation to one another

Europortfolio October 27 and 28, 2005 European Schoolnet 15 Challenges to be met Compulsory / voluntary Same ELP / different for different specific needs? Training policy: information sessions / embedded in training plans Descriptors language: adapted and translated or not

Europortfolio October 27 and 28, 2005 European Schoolnet Common observations All the case studies presented are policy- driven initiatives about portfolios - no e Initiatives are currently somewhat pioneers in European educational setting Fairly big evaluation parts –lack of research-based results on the topic –policy-makers seek for insights

Europortfolio October 27 and 28, 2005 European Schoolnet Common observations Introduction of a new tool can develop new competencies and bring about new ways of working together and improved collaboration among teachers –Still somewhat a problematic issue in many schools in Europe. Important to involve the portfolio owner, i.e. the learner into the process

Europortfolio October 27 and 28, 2005 European Schoolnet Common observations Competencies and assessment seem to be the key elements –but also other elements such as self-reflection and personal development exist to some extent. –home–school link is emphasised especially by Italy and Norway

Europortfolio October 27 and 28, 2005 European Schoolnet Common observations Dimension of introduction of technology vs. introduction of the concept of portfolio –In most cases the policy enforced the use of portfolio, whereas in Norway and to some extend in Finland also, it was about introducing learning technologies such as the use of LMS, in the workflow.

Europortfolio October 27 and 28, 2005 European Schoolnet Common challenges Are portfolios driving any change towards technology use? –To implement e-portfolio into the back-end of existing LMS used in education or to embrace a new service oriented architecture for portfolio services?

Europortfolio October 27 and 28, 2005 European Schoolnet Common challenges Common educational culture of a given country affects on the implementation as well as to the views that the diverse stakeholders have. –In some countries, such as Norway, the implementation of the portfolio is much more open, whereas in some other countries this is more restrictive.

Europortfolio October 27 and 28, 2005 European Schoolnet Common challenges Portfolio must be a meaningful part of the learning process and the workflow –As mentioned in most of the case studies, this was seen as a challenge. Re-thinking the reasons for portfolios usage and its purposes of use should be fundamental before embarking on the implementation.

Europortfolio October 27 and 28, 2005 European Schoolnet Common challenges Transition from a paper based portfolio into a digital one – the concept of usage changes with the new media. This brings along issues related to the management, organisation, the issues of privacy, rights, access and portability will become important.
