TECHNOLOGY IN THE COMMUNITY Community Center Representative EDU 620 Meeting Individual Student Needs Instructor: Dusty Clark January 21 st 2016 Amber Currie

STATION 1 AUDIENCE & UDL On a big screen a video will play, with the opportunities that technology offers. The community will watch an introduction video, with examples of the benefits of technology. They will see the use of computers, iPads, and smartphones. There will be one item of each on display for the community to observe.

STATION 1 UDL & INFORMATION https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A88E4DH2asQ Members attending this event will watch a 6 minute video. This will explain the Universal Design for Learning, in our community. This video will provide the audience with a brief overview of what UDL is and how it affects our everyday lives. Three key elements of UDL will be reviewed with the audience. This will help convey a better understanding of the UDL method and its importance. Multiple means of representatio, to give learners various ways of acquiring information and knowledge Multiple means of expression, to provide learners alternatives for demonstrating what they know, and Multiple means of engagement, to tap into learners’ interests, challenge them appropriately, and motivate them to learn. ( Edyburn, D. L. 2005 Pg. 17)

STATION 1 UDL & DEMONSTRATION The 6 minute community centered video, will show a demonstration of the UDL method, how UDL is used in our community, and how our world is not designed to be one size fits all. To expand on more demonstrations of UDL, participants will engage in discussion. Participants will be asked to think of ways that they have experienced UDL in their lives or think of ways that UDL can be beneficial, in others lives. This discussion will promote critical thinking and will keep participants engaged.

STATION 1 DIFFERENTIATION & INTERACTION UDL impacts our society everyday. There are people who struggle to do daily tasks, because accommodations are not made for them. At this event, we will discuss how technology helps to make life easier, for individuals, in our society. Examples: interactive screens at a drive through, or smart phones with larger text. There are many benefits that technology offers our unique society. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOQRklTPA8Ehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOQRklTPA8E By providing several examples, the participants will see the need for technology, in our community. “The centers provide participants with a variety of educational and vocational opportunities at low or no cost, including computer, job training, English language, and GED classes. They also provide unstructured access to computers, the Internet, and e-mail” (New EDC Study Documents Use and Benefits of Community-Based Technology Centers. 1998, July 31). If participants are given the chance to use some of the technology items introduced to them, they will want to interact. By engaging in discussion and showing the needs for technology, it will help promote participation.

STATION 2 MISSION To serve and provide the local community with the technological resources to advance and succeed in the 21st century workforce; ensuring that each unique individual is well equipped and competent, with the new advances that technology offers.

STATION 2 BELIEF AND GOALS Introduction to Workforce Technology 101 Goal 1- Assist the community in learning new technologicaldevices and helping them master these devices. Goal 2- Aiding participants in choosing the right technological devices, to make their lifestyles easier. Goal 3- Increase employment, decrease limitations, and create an equal level playing field, with the advancement of technology, in the community.

STATION 2 PROGRAM OFFERINGS Online resume building classes Career Transitions class via www.Onetonline.orgwww.Onetonline.org Basic, intermediate, and advanced computer classes. Microsoft Office course including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Publisher. Introduction to technology course Employability skills course via www.skillsyouneed.comwww.skillsyouneed.com Labor Market/Jobs in Demand courses using www.ncworks.gov Money Smart (using excel for budget tracking)

STATION 3 TECHNOLOGY & 21 ST CENTURY SKILLS Microsoft office course including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher. This course will teach participants how to use each of the programs that Microsoft office offers. Those attending will be proficient in Information, Media, and Technology skills. “Today we live in a technology and media-suffused environment with: 1) access to an abundance of information, 2) rapid changes in technology tools, and 3) the ability to collaborate and make individual contributions on an unprecedented scale. To be effective in the 21st century, citizens and workers must be able to create, evaluate, and effectively utilize information, media, and technology” (http://www.p21.org/about-us/p21-framework). Benefits of teaching the community to use several technological devises: Participants can obtain better paying jobs, start a new career, or go back to school. This course will allow participants to learn to use technology effectively and efficiently. Utilizing the ability to apply technology effectively “http://www.p21.org/about-us/p21- framework/350).http://www.p21.org/about-us/p21-framework)

STATION 3 TOOLS & INTERACTION Common tools that will be used in many of the courses are computers. There will also be smart phones and tablets. Interaction will be achieved when participants get a chance to experiment, with the technological devices. There will be three of each device, for participants to use. Once familiar with the device, participates will see how much technology is needed and its many benefits. This will demonstrate that there is a need, for more technological devices, for the career center. Everyone will want to use one, but there will not be one for everyone to use. This will increase the community's interest in technology and hopefully make them want more.

STATION 3 NEW TECHNOLOGY People in the community will greatly benefit from having more available technology. Everyone should be able to use a computer and tablet, at the community center. There should be more than three computers, for our community to use. By providing the participants, in our community, with the ability use these devices, increases their opportunity to enhance their futures. The more technology is used, the more confident people will be with it. This will entice them to want to go start new careers or go back to school; which benefits not only the person, but the overall community. This in turn helps the economy and the workforce.
