© 2009 IBM Corporation Statements of IBM future plans and directions are provided for information purposes only. Plans and direction are subject to change without notice. When to sell what, where, and when Ryan Leonard Storage and Solutions Architect

System Storage October 2007 © 2009 IBM Corporation IBM Storage Product Lines Increasing performance and functionality This table represents general positioning and not technical capabilities Entry-levelSMBRemote officeDepartmentData Center  SAS connectivity with Mega RAID and ServeRAID 8S SAS adapters  Internal DAS solution  Enhanced RAID functionality  Comprehensive software  SAS | iSCSI connectivity  Shared DAS  Simple management  Snapshot replication  First external RAID  FC connectivity  Shared DAS  Entry-level SANs  Simple management  FlashCopy replication  FC connectivity  Homogeneous SANs  Configuration flexibility  Robust management  Data replication  FC connectivity  Heterogeneous SANs  Highest performance  Extensive configuration flexibility and data replication services DS4700 DS3200 EXP3000 DS3300 DS3400 DS4800 DS5100 DS5300

System Storage October 2007 © 2009 IBM Corporation Four basic environment questions  How many servers?  What OS types?  How many drives are required? –Both capacity and performance considerations  Need for premium features? –FlashCopy, VolumeCopy, Mirroring –Additional capacity and performance considerations

System Storage October 2007 © 2009 IBM Corporation Servers  Partition limits and capabilities are different on the various products –Maximum of 32 partitions on DS3000 –Maximum of 128 partitions on DS4700 –Maximum of 512 partitions on DS4800, DS5000

System Storage October 2007 © 2009 IBM Corporation OS Types  Supported operating environment varies by product type –DS3000 (generically) support x86 OSes Some exceptions for AIX, Solaris –DS4000 and DS5000 have broader coverage HP-UX and others

System Storage October 2007 © 2009 IBM Corporation Number of drives  One of most critical distinctions between products –DS3000 supports a maximum of 48 drives –DS4700 supports a maximum of 112 drives –DS4800 supports a maximum of 224 drives –DS5100 supports a maximum of 256 drives –DS5300 supports a maximum of 448 drives *  How many drives are needed for capacity?  How many drives are needed for performance?  Choose the HIGHER of the two values!  Don’t forget to ask about growth…. * Enabled in future firmware release – 2009

System Storage October 2007 © 2009 IBM Corporation Premium features  Not all systems support all features –DS3000 products do not support Enhanced Remote Mirroring  Some degree of variance in terms of supported limits –DS3000 and DS4700 support 8 FlashCopies per logical drive –DS4800 and DS5000 support 16 FlashCopies per logical drive –DS4700 supports 64 mirrors maximum –DS4800 and DS5000 support 128 mirrors maximum  Don’t forget to account for premium feature capacity! –FlashCopy baseline is 20% of original per FlashCopy –VolumeCopy baseline is 100% of original per VolumeCopy –Mirroring baseline is 100% of original per Mirror

System Storage October 2007 © 2009 IBM Corporation Given all of the above…  Your mileage may vary!  Every configuration has its own unique rules which may override the above fairly general statements  These 4 basic criteria are intended as a guide, not an absolute
