2 What is CBMIS? collect information & track changes at local level, driven by local needs helps communities identify impacts on their lives, culture and knowledge produce evidence for communities to express their interests in land allows for informed collective action

3 Purpose of CBMIS Delineation and demarcation obtaining titles identifying and monitoring land use tracking use/decline of traditional knowledge, indigenous languages and customary governance monitoring biodiversity and ecosystem integrity resolution of conflicts development of territorial management plans advocating for policy reforms

4 Participatory mapping generates spatial information converts people's memory into usable knowledge facilitates informed decision- making

5 Monitoring Often builds on mapping Wide variety of indicators Comparability vs. grounding in local context monitoring of international agreements & benchmarks

6 Advantages Complements other mapping & monitoring approaches Fosters participatory development Effectiveness by being informed and responsive to local realities Accountability – real-time, real-people feed back Legitimises indigenous knowledge Multiple benefits (sustainability, cost-effectiveness, community-level decision making)
