We were called to a man who had collapsed in an alley with a suspected drug overdose. He was initially unresponsive but gradually came round as the Street Pastors talked to him. He was obviously on drugs but didn't smell of alcohol, and the Street Pastors worked with the bouncers to find out his name and address and locate his friends who could tell us what he had taken. He was then taken to hospital with a friend. We were called to a man who had collapsed in an alley with a suspected drug overdose. 11 Some Stories - April We found a girl and her mother running up St James's Street covered in blood, followed by a police man, they had been in the chip shop and had challenged someone on queue jumping who had then punched both them. They were very shaken and upset, it was the girls 18th birthday and her first time out in town. Whilst the Policeman took statements from witnesses, we were able to give the girl first aid and calm her down, clean her up and make sure that she got to hospital safely. We met a lady in her early 20’s who was having a heated argument with her partner (who was high on cocaine). We managed to calm things down a bit, although he was very abusive. He left with all her money, and her friend was going to have to get out of bed and bring her 2 young kids into town to fetch her. We were able to get her home safely, by paying for a taxi. 12 Some Stories – May We found a girl who had fallen over and cut her knees, we were able to give her first aid. Her boyfriend and friends were quite abusive and just wanted to get kebabs but the girl couldn't walk, we called a taxi and convinced them to stop on route. Whilst waiting for the taxi the girl revealed that she was scared to go home as her boyfriend was abusing her and regularly beating her, she also had a young baby. The Street Pastors were able to signpost her to domestic violence help line, she got in contact with Street Pastors via Facebook on the Sunday and arranged to meet Jo on the Monday. She is now under the care of the domestic violence support team, and YUMS which is a support group for young urban mum's where she will receive ongoing support and a mentor. We found an 18 year old girl alone at a bus stop who was crying, she had been to see a gig and then had lost her friends who were meant to be taking her home to Farnsfield, her mobile had run out of battery, she had no money and was unable to contact anyone. We let her use our mobile phone to contact her parents, and walked her to the night bus however her last bus had already left, so we contacted her parents who agreed to pay for a taxi for her, we were able to put her safely into a taxi and ensure she didn't have to spend a night on her own in the city. 13 Some Stories - June We chatted to a Canadian man in his twenties, who intermittently sleeps rough in Leeds. He moved here after his family had all passed away. He'd got himself to Nottingham, as he'd been on a train to Leeds from London without a ticket, and had been kicked off the train in Nottingham. He was begging to try and get enough money for a ticket back to Leeds. We paid for his ticket, but the next train wasn't until the morning. He slept at the station until the first morning train departed. We chatted to a Canadian man in his twenties, who intermittently sleeps rough in Leeds. A man was drunk, and had collapsed on the pavement, and was unable to communicate properly. We tried to find out his details, but he wasn't able to remember them, so we had to call a paramedic. We waited with him until an ambulance crew arrived, who were going to take him to A & E, but by this point he had sobered up slightly and refused to go with them. We walked with him partway home, by which point he knew his address and was able to walk himself. The Taxi Marshalls called us to an incident that lasted for an hour and a half on Parliament Street. 14 Some Stories - July In Market Square, we heard a really loud crack coming from behind us, so we turned around and saw that a fight had broken out between a group of men, who were pushing each other, and one man was being stamped on whilst on the floor. We found that the man on the floor had been pushed hard into some glass, and the cracking sound we heard was not the glass breaking, but his head hitting the glass. We broke up the fight and gave first aid to the man who had been attacked; he wasn't breathing at first but soon came round, one of his eyes was dilated, so we called an ambulance and kept him safe until the ambulance and police arrived. A homeless man was threatening to commit suicide. He threatened to run out in the road in front of traffic while we were with him so we stayed with him to make sure he was safe while we called an ambulance and waited for them to arrive.
