I Have A Dream Watch the I Have A Dream Speech Follow along and think about the language that he uses and his message https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smEqnnklf Ys

Quotes’ Meaning Read the quotes from the speech Discuss with a neighbor the metaphors used. Using the information from the quotes and metaphors write what you think the meaning of the quote is.

HDT 5/8/14 Complete the last metaphor- The rest should be completed. Quote: "And those who hope that the Negro needed to blow off steam and will now be content will have a rude awakening if the nation returns to business as usual. And there will be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights. The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges." Metaphor: The potential revolt caused by the nation returning to "business as usual" is compared to a whirlwind. The nation's founding principals--what King relies on in his speech for political legitimacy--is compared to a foundation. Justice emerging is compared to a bright day.

HDT Finish the last metaphors

HDT 4/22 How does this song relate to I Have a Dream metaphors? If you'd take the train with me uptown, through the misery of ghetto streets in morning light, it's always night. Take a window seat, put down your Times. You can read between the lines. Just meet the faces that you meet beyond the window's pane. And it might begin to teach you how to give a damn about your fellow man. And it might begin to reach you how to give a damn about your fellow man. Or put your girl to sleep sometime with rats instead of nursery rhymes, with hunger and your other children by her side, and wonder if you'll share your bed with something else which must be fed, for fear may lie beside you or it may sleep down the hall. And it might begin to teach you how to give a damn about your fellow man. And it might begin to reach you how to give a damn about your fellow man. Come and see how well despair is seasoned by the stifling air. See your ghetto in the good old sizzling summertime. Suppose the streets were all on fire? The flames, like tempers, leaping higher. Suppose you'd lived there all your life, do you think that you would mind? And it might begin to reach you Why I give a damn about my fellow man. And it might begin to teach you How to give a damn about your fellow man.

HDT 4/22 Listen and read the words to the song on the following slide and write: ▫ How do the lyrics relate to the I have a Dream speech? ▫https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFwfe4Sjvm w

Guidelines for writing a dialog between Martin Luther King Jr and Malcolm X Begin your dialogue by copying the following lines on a piece of paper. Malcolm X: Martin, you’re going about this civil rights movement all wrong. Martin Luther King Jr. : Is that right? Well, do you have any better ideas? Malcolm X: As a matter a fact, I do… Use the issues raised in your discussion, the information on student handout 2.2a, and the Venn diagram to complete the dialogue, Refer to at least 4 differences between the two leaders raised in the discussion or in the background information. Underline those 4 differences in your writing.

Example Mal. X- As a matter of fact I do. Whites will never give the Negros equal status in American society without the use of violence. I’m not saying we should hunt them down, but if they come at us, we must retaliate. MLKjr- All can live together as brothers and sisters. We will gain more support from the government if we do not fight. Others will see the brutality of TV and will realize that segregation is wrong. This would be one difference, not two.
