III. Symbiosis & Predator/Prey Interaction

A. Symbiosis:A relationship where one species of organisms lives near, in, or on another organism. 1. Mutualism: both organisms benefit (+,+) EX: Insect pollinating a flower  insect gets the nectar from the flower & flower gets fertilized

2. Commensalism:one organism benefits and the other is NOT affected (+,0) EX: Clown fish living in an anemone -“Finding Nemo”  clown fish gains shelter & protection from predators and the anemone is unaffected.

3. Parasitism:one organism benefits and the other is harmed (+,-) Parasite  Benefits Host  Harmed EX: Heartworm inside of a dog  Heartworms (parasite) feed and reproduce in heart and vessels causing restricted blood flow in the dog (host). Not a picture for the faint of heart… Get it???

B. Predator/Prey Relationships: Rise and fall of both populations in a cycle The predator population is always smaller and lagging behind the prey population. Why? Predators rely on the prey Prey trophic level below the predator trophic level Number of Individuals Predator = HunterPrey = Food
