3 Why you might have found it difficult…. Multidisciplinary, multiagency, multiprofessional Confusing nomenclature Many settings and roles – people move around in careers And it is all changing!

4 Definition The science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through the organised efforts of society (Acheson, 1988) What unites public health and the people working in it: A focus on population health and wellbeing (utilitarian v 1-1) An objective to improve and protect health; reduce inequalities Work on major public health issues (eg swine flu, tobacco control, obesity, alcohol misuse, widening inequalities, climate change) and a passion to do something about them!

6 Work within and across 3 “domains” – health improvement, health services, health protection supported by health intelligence and academic public health Unifying competence framework -core skills set – epidemiology, statistics, critical appraisal, research, strategic leadership, partnership, managerial and engagement, project and programme management

7 How we categorise the ph workforce: Specialists (strategic/consultant level) Practitioners (operational – 2 categories) Wider workforce (all those with a role)

8 Specific health service roles now: PH nurses, infection control, health promotion, CPH, health intelligence, PH project and programme management Formal qualifications (and regulation) for some: consultants, PH nursing, ph nutrition, ph psychologists, ph pharmacy. UKPHR does offer (voluntary) practitioner registration AfC band 5 and up Multidisciplinary higher specialist training scheme :
