Division of Hazard Analysis

 Consists of 11 Masters and PhD level statisticians within the Directorate for Epidemiology.  We estimate consumer product related injuries and fatalities to: ◦ characterize hazard patterns ◦ identify emerging trends ◦ support development of safety features and standards ◦ inform consumer product related enforcement and regulatory decisions. 2

 Generating product-associated fatality and injury estimates using: ◦ a CPSC probability based stratified survey of hospital emergency departments (National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS)) ◦ Incident data from internet, hotline, media reports and external sources  Screening data for: ◦ Trends ◦ Emerging hazards ◦ Hazard patterns  Designing special follow-up CATI studies  Designing/analyzing experimental data related to product safety testing  Providing statistical expertise/advice to project teams and management. 3

 To characterize product-associated injuries, fatalities, and concerns to  Inform safety and regulatory decision  Inform the public  Respond to Congressional inquiries  Support operational planning 4

 Through a myriad of documents such as annual reports, memoranda, and product safety assessments, based on analyses of various data sourcesannual reports memorandaproduct safety assessments  Internal data  IPII (news clips, coroner’s reports, hotline / internet complaints, etc.)  INDP (in-depth investigations)  DTHS (death certificates)  NEISS (hospital emergency dept visits)  Other  External data  NFIRS (fire data)  NCHS (mortality data)  Other 5
