3 What is Health Careers Education? Health Careers Education introduces students to a variety of careers and professional roles within healthcare, as well as gives students an opportunity to become a Certified Nurse Assistant, Medical Assistant, Phlebotomist, and/or Patient Care Technician.

4 Course Outline First Semester focuses on Certified Nurse Assistant: Anatomy and Physiology Diseases Treatment of Diseases Skills necessary for Patient Care Second Semester focuses on Medical Assistant and Patient Care Tech: Administrative Procedures Insurance, Billing, and Coding Medical Office Procedures and Management Phlebotomy Skills EKG Skills

8 Assignments - Classroom Grading will be based on the following categories: Medical Terminology Interactive Notebook Projects/Research Tests Vocab Quizzes Anatomy/Physiology/Worksheets

9 Assignments – Clinical Grading will be based on the following categories: Lab Work/Homework Professionalism Clinical Journals Current Events Community Service Notebook Quizzes/Tests Practical Exam

10 Grading Scale In an effort to ensure our students are achieving at their highest potential and to better prepare our students for the state certification exams, our program uses an advanced proficiency grading scale. A=100 – 93 B= 92 – 85 C= 84 – 78 D= 77 – 70 F= 69 – 0

11 Minimum Scores Students must maintain an average of 85% or higher in the class to qualify for the state certification exams. Students earning lower than a 78% average will participate in academic remediation. These guidelines will help ensure student success

12 Attendance Policy Students are expected to attend all classes. If a student is going to be absent or late, instructors must be notified. Maximum of three absences allowed per year, or one for summer school.

13 Uniform and Supplies for Clinicals Uniform Scrubs White crew neck t-shirt Mostly white, clean, athletic shoes Watch with a second hand Black ink pen Stethoscope (provided) Blood pressure cuff (provided) Gait Belt (provided) NO CELL PHONES WILL BE ALLOWED

14 Requirements for Clinicals Students must maintain optimum health throughout the program. CPR for Health Care Provider and maintain current status throughout the program. Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance Card/Background Check TB Test Negative drug screen (Students may be randomly selected to complete a drug screening any time during clinicals.) Physical examination Proof of rubella and rubeola immunity by positive antibody titers OR 2 doses of MMR Evidence of the series of three hepatitis B vaccinations Completion of all forms and necessary training required by hospital or healthcare facility Flu shot during time required by hospital or healthcare facility

15 HOSA – Future Health Professionals HOSA is an international student organization whose mission is to promote career opportunities in the healthcare industry and to enhance the quality of healthcare to all people. HOSA is a co-curricular organization which provides fantastic leadership development and quality learning experiences for involved students.
