27 GROWTH MINDSET Language learning is a challenging and rewarding experience with the potential to benefit all students. Students with special education needs may benefit from particular strategies and/or supports to meet their individual needs as second language learners. Moving towards productive beliefs about participation in FSL programs Having FSL of instruction offers an additional layer of difficulty that students with special education needs “just don’t need”. 28 GROWTH MINDSET Teachers need the support of the larger community to create a learning environment that supports all students. FSL teachers, like all teachers, need appropriate training and resources in order to help them support students with special education needs in their classrooms. Moving towards productive beliefs about participation in FSL programs Because FSL teachers do not have the resources or training to support students with special education needs, such students would be better served by exemption from FSL.
