Learning Intentions I can explain the importance of temperature for enzyme activity. I understand the word optimum. I can explain an experiment which illustrates how enzymes work at optimum temperatures. Success Criteria – I can carry out a practical which is valid and reliable. – I can complete a practical write up according to the given criteria. – I can carry out an experiment in a safe environment. – I can use my practical activity to write a report, analyse my data and make a valid conclusion.

Importance of temperature for enzymes. 37 0 C is body temperature and it needs to be kept constant. If it rises too much enzymes will become denatured and no longer work, cells may die. Metabolism is the set of chemical reactions that happen in the cells of living organisms to sustain life. For this reason, having all enzymes working at their optimum is important for all chemical reactions to be working at their fastest speed.

Starch Maltose Amylase

What do you think optimum temperature means? The temperature the enzyme works best at/is most active at What do you think the optimum temperature for human enzymes is? 37 0 C

optimum temperature temperature37 0 C

substrate enzyme Enzyme heated above optimum temperature. What has happened?

When an enzyme is denatured the of its is changed and the can no longer fit into it like a shape active site substrate lock and key

Above optimum temperature the enzyme is denatured (the shape of the active site changes, and enzyme doesn’t work)

The enzyme still works, but much more slowly. It takes longer for the enzyme to collide with the substrate What happens to enzymes activity at low temperatures?
