These line drawings are from the Wisconsin Water Resources Clip Art Collection developed by the Environmental Resources Center, University of Wisconsin-Extension in cooperation with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources under funding from the Wisconsin Priority Watershed Program, the Basin Education Program and the Wisconsin Lakes Partnership. Contributing artists: Lynne Bergschultz, Joe Heller, Chris Pike, Jerry Scott, and Carol Watkins. The CD may be ordered for $35 from UW-Extension Publications, 333 W. Miflin ST., Madison, WI 53703 or Tel: 608-262-3346. These illustrations may be used without permission for educational, non-profit purposes. For more information, contact the Environmental Resources Center at 608-262-1369 Lesson 2 Student Activity Solving Water Quality Concerns: Best Management Practices (BMPs) Answer Key for Land Use Photos Student Directions: 1) State the land use. 2) Describe one water quality problem. 3) Draw one Best Management Practice (BMP) in the picture 4) Describe how the BMP will prevent or reduce water pollution.

#1 Land Use: commercial, urban, or parking lot. Water Quality Problem: storm water runoff carries motor oil, gas, and litter into nearby streams BMP: plant islands of shrubs and trees to reduce runoff and allow some infiltration to recharge groundwater. #1

Land Use: agriculture or farming Water Quality Problem: streambank and sediment are falling into stream due to loss of streamside shrubs and trees. BMP: plant native species of shrubs and trees to hold soil in place and stop bank erosion. #2

#3 Land Use: commercial or residential construction Water Quality Problem: storm water runoff carries sediment into nearby streams BMP: provide erosion control, such as silt fences, to prevent runoff carrying sediment from reaching the stream.

#4 Land Use: agriculture or grazing (pigs). Water Quality Problem: livestock grazing trample streambanks causing erosion, and animal wastes add nutrients and bacteria to streams. BMP: limit or prevent livestock grazing along streams; allow native shrubs and trees to grow along streambanks to prevent erosion; provide a water tank for livestock to drink from located away from the stream.
