14 LESSONS LEARNT (2): From the mentee : mentor pairs: 1.Pairing via preferred future speciality (where possible). 2.Dedicated protected time for mentorship. 3.Early agreement of aims of mentorship relationship. 4.Confidentiality. 5.Frequent contact with mentee : mentor pairs.

15 KEY MESSAGES: o Formal peer mentoring is a valuable but underused tool in supporting and training foundation doctors. o The foundation doctors at this hospital felt more confident in their roles, better supported and better equipped for future job applications after taking part in this scheme. o The format of the scheme is easy to roll out for use in other hospitals or departments.

16 SHARING GOOD PRACTICE – STARTER PACK: This document has been prepared for use by clinicians/educational leads working with foundation trainees who wish to implement the scheme. Mentorship scheme currently hosted at Barnet and Royal Free Hospitals (Aug 2014 – 2015).
