1 Eclipses: Question: What’s the difference between a solar and a lunar eclipse? OBJECTIVE: Students will be able to draw the position of the Sun, moon and Earth during a solar and lunar eclipse. VOCABULARY: lunar eclipsesolar eclipse

2 Lunar Eclipse The moon does not give off its own light. We only see the moon when it is lit by the sun. If the Earth passes directly between the moon and sun, the Earth will block the sun’s light and cast a shadow on the moon. This is called a lunar eclipse.lunar eclipse

4 Sometimes the Earth blocks out some of the sun’s light. This is a partial eclipse. If the Earth blocks out all of the sun’s light, it is a total eclipse. During a total lunar eclipse, some light bends around the Earth causing the full moon to appear red. Partial eclipse Total eclipse
