Meeting the Curriculum with Differentiation The goal is to meet students’ needs, not give them MORE/LESS work than others. 3 As your child’s teachers, I will differentiate instruction based on the needs of your scholars. What is “differentiated instruction?” It’s instruction that is based on the fact that students are most excited and engaged when curriculum is modified in response to students’ varied readiness levels, interests, and learning styles. I will do this through various GATE strategies that will have your scholars exploring the curriculum and thinking critically. Scholars will work in various cooperative groups, be involved in rich discussions in Literature Circles, and other content areas. Scholars will often times have choice. Scholars will also need to be able to work independently.

4. Room 21 is College Bound 4 Code of Conduct: 6 behavior expectations “Character is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.” Character traits are directly tied to classroom and school rules. A trait will be of focus for each month. The student who exemplifies the month’s particular trait will be recognized at our monthly assembly.

5. Classroom Management 5 If students choose to break the code of conduct that we have all agreed upon, the following are the consequences: Step 1: Caution- Sign the book. Step 2: Stop- Sign the book, Fill out Re-Think Letter, Letter needs to be signed by parent, No recess Step 3: Time-Out- Sign the book, Call office, Work in another assigned area, Phone call home Step 4 or Any Severe Disruption- Call office, Detained in office, Possible Character Violation, Phone call to parent Positive Reinforcements: Vertical Color Chart and Friday Raffles Praise daily Random positive notes home Aztec Gold Slips Character Counts awards

Parents as Partners Staff, students, and parents are all asked to follow the same 6 pillars that make up our Code of Conduct. 4 th graders will have greater responsibilities, please help them carry out those responsibilities. Students will receive agendas purchased by our generous PTA. Check homework folders/agendas periodically. Parent-Teacher communication: email, text, agendas, calls Teacher web-page Notes when absent Extra-curricular family nights 7
