In this talk we review a new model for quasistatic finite deformation of swelling incompressible porous media derived from mixture theory. The model describes an electrically charged porous solid saturated with a monovalent ionic solution. Solid, fluid, anion and cation phases are defined and balance laws for each phase and for the mixture as a whole are derived. As an example, we turn to connective tissue in which the solid phase is negatively charged by the presence of glycosaminoglycan (GAG) molecules and the ionic concentration gradient can generate significant osmotic pressure. An analysis of the swelling of human cornea under a shock of NaCl hypertonic solution is presented. We also show through a molecular-level analysis that the electrostatic interaction between GAGs and free ions controls the collagen interfibril spacing and thereby maintains the transparency of the tissue. 6. 약 력 : Dr. Pinsky holds a B.Sc. degree from the University of Wales, Swansea, an M.A.Sc. degree from the University of Toronto, and a Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley, all in the field of Civil Engineering. In this talk we review a new nearly incompressible hyperelastic constitutive model for the stroma and describe experiments for characterizing the mechanical properties. The model employs an averaging theory applied to a representative lamella in which the probability of collagen orientation, as measured by x-ray scattering, is used as weighting. In order to identify the model parameters we have completed in vivo mechanical testing by measuring the contours of a human cornea deformed in situ by a mechanical probe and in vitro by direct measurement of shear stiffness. An application to laser eye surgery (LASIK) is described. 6. 약 력 : Dr. Pinsky holds a B.Sc. degree from the University of Wales, Swansea, an M.A.Sc. degree from the University of Toronto, and a Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley, all in the field of Civil Engineering.
