3  The law of Prohibition became impossible to enforce.  It was easy to smuggle liquor across the border from Canada and The Caribbean.  Liquor smugglers, called bootleggers made huge profits importing liquor illegally.  Every large town had speakeasies, which illegally served liquor.

4  The money made through bootlegging encouraged the growth of organized crime.  By the end of the decade, it was clear that Prohibition had failed.  The 21 st Amendment repealed Prohibition returning the control to the states.

5  American women voted in their very first election in 1920.  The first women governors were elected in 1924. They were Nellie Tayloe Ross in Wyoming, and Miriam Ferguson in Texas.  Overall, more women were holding jobs.

6  Many younger women during the 1920s were not concerned with women’s rights. They were called flappers.

7  Henry Ford introduced the assembly line which reduced the time it took to make cars.  The car was called the Model T.

8  1. Symbol of freedom and independence.  2. It created new business.  3. Major highways had gas stations, restaurants, and cabins.

9  Almost any family could afford to buy a radio.  The radio became a leading form of entertainment.  The first commercial radio station was KDKA.  National Radio Network= NBC

10  The movies provided an escape from everyday life.  The movie industry grew up in Hollywood.  Famous actor of the time= Charlie Chaplin.

11  John Scopes was accused of violating Tennessee law by teaching the theory of evolution to his students.  The prosecutor was William Jennings Bryan, and the defense attorney was Clarence Darrow at the trial.  In the end, Scope’s was convicted, and lost his job.

12  In the 1920s, a large percentage of African Americans moved north. This was called the Great Migration.  The Ku Klux Klan scorned blacks, immigrants, and Jews.
