1 PRESENTATION OF PUBLIC PRIVATE PARTNERSHIPS IN THE TOURISM SECTOR BY NINA MAYNARD EXECUTIVE BOARD MEMBER BAHAMAS HOTEL & TOURISM ASSOCIATION

2 BACKGROUND Bahamas is an archipelagic SIDS made up of 700 islands and cays stretched over more than 100000 sq. miles of ocean off the south eastern coast of the USA Tourism has been our business for the 1800’s it is the largest contributor to our economy Challenge of duplication of basic infrastructure throughout the islands which limits reach of available resources eg: airports, docks, medical facilities, government services, roads, communications, technology, energy plants Close proximity to the USA has advantages and disadvantages Harmonization of ecosystems protection, economic growth and socio cultural immersion critical to sustainability

3 Pilot program included over 120 tourism SME’s in six islands Found solutions germane to sustainability and progressive development Forged connectivity with complimenting clusters and sectors eg.  Agro-fisheries,  Business support,  Transportation, etc. Created sub clusters – MOB, Fly Fishing Association Worked on technology upgrades that would have connected all of the tourism SME’s Business support solution – National Resource Centre

4 TRANSPORTATION MAKE OR BREAK Options are limited to air and sea Engaging increased airlift into SIDS both regionally and internationally Ferry Services Combination Transportation Hurricane Joaquin provided a real time opportunity and feasibly effective example of possible transportation solutions for an island nation such as The Bahamas

5 What is needed for successful PPP’s? Local Partners International Partners Establish overarching goals for growth and development Ensure that there is tangible benefit to all involved Evolve the wheel rather than reinvent it Capitalize on individual strengths and synergies brought to the project Expertise and experience Resources Technical support Exposure

6 Brought together all facets of the tourism, cultural, historical, culinary, environmental and artistic sectors in an event that facilitated and exposed a phenomenal collaboration of oneness of purpose of PPP
