5 Controlled Intersections A controlled intersection means it is regulated by signals and/or signs. Types of regulatory devices: Traffic lights Stop Signs Yield Signs

6 Uncontrolled Intersections When there is no traffic light or regulatory device. As you near an uncontrolled intersection, reduce speed and be ready to stop. General Rule: vehicle on left should yield to a vehicle on the right.

7 Blind Intersections Buildings, Parked Cars, Trees… Anytime your vision is obstructed by an object you should slow down or stop and check around the obstruction before continuing.

8 Entering Highways There are no intersections when entering a highway. Enter a highway using an acceleration lane (on ramp) Acceleration Lane: extra lane used by motorists to speed up to join the flow of traffic.

9 Leaving a Highway Leave a highways by using a deceleration lane (exit ramp). Deceleration Lane: Extra lanes on a highway used to exit and slow down. Usually located on the right hand side of the road but not always. Remember: If you miss your exit, don ’ t stop, go to the next one.

10 Entering a Curve Adjust steering and speed when approaching a curve. During a curve, vehicles tend to keep going straight. Best way to enter a curve is slow down before entering and avoid drifting into another lane.

11 Right Turns Approach intersection as far right as possible Don ’ t cross dividing line

12 Right Turn on Red Unless there is a no turn on red sign, NJ law allows you to turn right on red. You must yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians before turning.

13 Turning Left Approach the turn as close as possible to the center line of the road. DO NOT make wide turns!

14 Turning Left Left turn from a 2 way road onto a 2 way road

15 Turning Left Left turn from a 2 lane road to a 4 lane highway.

16 Stopping & Parking Regulations Signs, Signals, and Traffic Rules indicate when you must stop. Check pg 72 in your manual for a list of when a motorist must stop.

17 Stopping & Parking Reg. When a yellow light follows a green light a motorist must stop before entering an intersection, unless yellow appears and it is unsafe to make a stop.

18 Stopping at Railroads At a railroad crossing: You must stop at least 15 feet away from the crossing when there are flashing lights or ringing bells.

19 Stopping for a School Bus On a two lane road you must stop at least 25 feet away from a school bus. If a bus has stopped directly in front of a school to pick up or let off children: –You may pass at 10 mph

20 Stopping for Emergency Vehicles When you hear or see emergency sirens or flashing lights: –Pull over to the extreme right and stop, let the emergency vehicle pass, and then continue on.

22 Headlights You must use headlights: –Whenever wipers are on –During rain or snow –During fog or mist –Whenever visibility is reduced

23 Bright and Dim High beams (bright) are used for open country roads. Dim are used for city driving or driving with traffic.
