8 Knowledge Transfer Networks Accelerating business innovation; a Technology Strategy Board programme Key mechanism for supporting business R&D – Competition priorities derived from Key Technology / Application Areas / Innovation Platforms – Support Business to Business and Science to Business R&D projects that will deliver successful new products and services – Funding for Basic, Applied and Experimental Development R&D projects (75% - 25% contribution towards project costs) – Since 2004 more than 600 Collaborative R&D projects approved for funding – (£3k - £9.5m) – representing about £1Bn of R&D activity TSB Collaborative R&D competitions

9 Knowledge Transfer Networks Accelerating business innovation; a Technology Strategy Board programme Technology-Inspired Collaborative Research and Development call October 2010 competition for funding with up to £18m allocated (~500K per project) “…especially keen to encourage innovation in new enabling technologies that have the potential to span different disciplines and may not be directly driven by society’s challenges.” The core technology areas covered by this competition are: – Advanced Materials; Biosciences; Electronics, Photonics and Electrical Systems; High Value Manufacturing; Information and Communications Technology; Nanotechnology. “Designing and developing innovative products or systems that offer improved performance, functionality, reliability, service life and reduced environmental impact” “Developing production technologies that can create high value through novel processes, advanced product manufacture, formulation, resource efficiency or greater product customisation, or that create environmental sustainability through efficient disposal, recycling or re-manufacture” Stage 1 – Competition opens 12 Oct 2010; EoI deadline 18 Nov 2010 Stage 2 – opens 13 Dec 2010; full applications Deadline 27 Jan 2011

EU's main instrument for funding research in Europe (2007 to 2013). EC budget - € 50.5 billion FP7 supports research in selected priority areas - the aim being to make, or keep, the EU as a world leader in those sectors and to respond to Europe’s employment needs and competitiveness. 4 main activities programmes - Cooperation, Ideas, People, Capacities Cooperation (Collaborative research) – Environment (including climate change) – Transport (including aeronautics) – Socio-economic sciences and humanities – Security – Space – Health – Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, Biotechnology – Information and Communication Technologies – Nanosciences, Nanotechnologies, Materials and new Production Technologies – Energy

14 Knowledge Transfer Networks Accelerating business innovation; a Technology Strategy Board programme Nanosciences, Nanotechnology, Materials and New Production Technologies (NMP) A 3.5b Euro programme that is broad-based and relevant to most key industrial and technology sectors in the UK Typical project sizes -Small/medium focused research (€1-4m); Large-integrating (€4m+) Consortia: typically 3+ partners from 2 or more countries Current calls of possible interest (all with 4 th Nov EoI deadline): -Eco-design of products -High-tech solutions in the production processes for customised green, safe and healthy consumer products -Smart and multifunctional packaging concepts utilizing nanotechnology -New targeted therapy using nanotechnology for transport of macro-molecules across biological barriers -Large-scale green and economical synthesis of nanoparticles and nanostructures

15 Knowledge Transfer Networks Accelerating business innovation; a Technology Strategy Board programme Initial Training Networks Sits within the People (Marie Curie) programme Main aim is to prepare students (mainly PhD, but some masters & postdocs too) for a career in research (industrial or academic) Scope is broad (bottom-up approach), but must tackle a scientifically challenging theme No upper limit, but €4m for a typically large project No match funding required Industry can participate as full or associated partners Can we solve key technical challenges and deliver the next generation of formulation scientists through this mechanism?

16 Knowledge Transfer Networks Accelerating business innovation; a Technology Strategy Board programme Regional Development Agencies and Devolved Administrations RDA/DAs offer a large range of funding mechanisms (strategic; SME focus) Generally easiest to find with help through cluster organisations Grants for Research and Development - Mainly available for SMEs to fund the practical application, commercialisation of technology. - Project duration: 0.5 to 3 years. - Funding: 35-60% of eligible project costs. ranging from £5k to £500k Innovation Vouchers Special Projects e.g. – Knowledge Centre for Materials Chemistry (NWDA) – Innovation Networks (Yorkshire Forward) – Molecular Engineering Translational Research Centre (Northern Way)
