Aim: to understand, using the correct words, the objects used by Jews at Prayer Goal: to reflect on the importance of prayer Plt unit focus: independent enquirer

How can clothes put us in the right frame of mind?

Kippah Tefillin Tallit

Kippah – It is a sign of respect to cover the head so they are showing respect to G-d. Also slaves used to wear them so it is symbolic of showing that they are servants of God. Tallit – the tassels or fringes (tzitzit) remind Jews to obey the 10 commandments and the 613 laws of Judaism and how important it is to follow them. Tefillin - 2 small black leather boxes which have verses of the torah inside them. One is worn on the forehead to show that Jews should be thinking about God and one on the top of the left arm to show that they love God (near the heart).

Activity You are going to design a new outfit/items of clothing for someone to wear during prayer. Think about what is important to you if you were praying – your outfit or items of clothing should reflect this.

“It does not matter what you wear when you pray. What matters to God is what you pray for.”
