Paper 2 Comparing 2-3 Texts

Step 1: Picking A Question Read all questions. Choose ONE of the six. If you can’t decide, make a quick outline for each and see which one will be easier to support. Go with your gut!

Step 2: Analysing the Question Let’s do one together: It is often said that literature is a voice for social commentary. How is this true of at least two works that you have read. What are the MOST IMPORTANT words in this question?

It is often said that literature is a voice for social commentary. How is this true of at least two works that you have read. Three questions in a question: 1. Why or how is the social context significant? 2. What social commentary is being made? 3. How is the commentary being created (through what literary or poetic techniques)?

Step 2: Note the Time Know where you should be at 4 points in time (based on starting time of 8.00): Finished pre-writing work (15 minutes) 8.15 Half way done 9.15 Starting conclusion (10 minutes left) 9.50 Finished with time for one last read 9.58 PROOFREAD AS YOU WRITE!

Step 3: Make an Outline Write a brief thesis statement for guidance. Make a brief outline and include for each body paragraph: I. TOPIC SENTENCE (PHRASE – Should include techniques as topic or themes with what techniques will be included in evidence!) A. TEXT A: 2-3 Examples B. TEXT B: 2-3 Examples Examples are ‘off the top of your head’. More should be added as you write! They also need relevant and sufficient analysis and discussion.

Let’s Make an Outline Together Let’s apply this question to Othello and Things Fall Apart., you are writing for Othello., you’re up for TFA. Take your places at the board. (Review below and go to next slide.) It is often said that literature is a voice for social commentary. How is this true of at least two works that you have read. Three questions in a question: Why or how is the social context significant? What social commentary is being made? How is the commentary being created (through what literary or poetic techniques)? Do we want to use these as topics? What would be the best topics for comparison?

Why or how is the social context significant? What social commentary is being made? How is the commentary being created (through what literary or poetic techniques)? Othello What is the social context? What is the social commentary being made? Which characters highlight this commentary? How? To what themes does the commentary link? How? Things Fall Apart Are you seeing some connections? Could you do at least one body paragraph for each of those sub-topics questions?

Step 4: Begin the Essay Introduction – question introduced and defined, brief relevant background information including both titles/authors, thesis statement Body Paragraphs – Aim for THREE TOPICS. Topic sentences, integrated evidence (quotes/paraphrasing), articulate and convincing discussion, closing sentences or transitional sentences Conclusion – So what? *The examiner has read your texts. Don’t summarize plot or re-tell the story!

Step 5: ON-GOING Revision! Read your essay carefully. Do you have a clear thesis? Does each topic sentence match your thesis? Do your evidence and analysis match your thesis? Do you include stylistic devices ? Change words that are repeated too often. Change weak words like good, nice, a lot, etc. Capitalize and punctuate! DO YOU ANSWER THE QUESTION?

To Prepare for Paper 2 Read through the texts AGAIN. Read through the comparative charts and sample questions. Read through notes/worksheets/internet guides. Practice answering questions!
