2 From 1910–1940, Angel Island was an immigration station where immigrants entering the United States were detained and interrogated. “Ellis Island of the West” Majority of immigrants processed on Angel Island were from Asian countries, specifically China, Japan, Russia and South Asia

5 Workingman in SanFran We have met here in San Francisco tonight to raise our voice to you in warning of a great danger that seems to us imminent. So that now hundreds and thousands of Chinese are every weak flocking into our state. Today every avenue to labor, of every sort, is crowded with Chinese slave labor worse than it was eight years ago. They monopolize nearly all the farming done to supply the market with all sorts of vegetables The treatment of the Chinese in this country is all wrong and mean. There is no reason for the prejudice against the Chinese. But the trouble is that the Chinese are such excellent and faithful workers that bosses will have no others when they can get them. It was the jealousy of laboring men and other nationalities especially the Irish that raised the outcry against the Chinese. No one would hire an Irishman…our countrymen are so much honest, industrious, steady, sober, painstaking. Chinese Immigrant

6 Was the first law restricting immigration to the United States. It was enacted due to fear that Chinese immigrants were taking jobs away from American workers. (high unemployment rate/Chinese viewed as inferior). Halted Chinese immigration for ten years and prohibited Chinese from becoming US citizens.
