1 Themes SWBAT define “theme” and “theme topic” and construct statements of theme for “All Summer in a Day”

2 Theme Topic  One word or idea that the text conveys:  Innocence  Love  Rage  Greed  Jealousy

3 Theme  A full theme must be a complete statement. What universal lesson/message(s) does the text teach?  Theme topic + message= THEME

4 Theme  Topic: Love  We can only love others when we learn to love ourselves.  Love can help a person overcome insurmountable obstacles.

5 Theme  Topic: Anger

6 “All Summer” Themes  Jealousy can drive individuals to be hurtful to those they envy.  Individuals are forced to face the consequences of their actions. (Saying I am sorry cannot undo the damage that has been done)  Guilt will damper a person’s happiness. (Doing something bad may feel “good” in the moment, but it will not feel good in the long run. If you do a bad act in order to accomplish something, you will not end up able to enjoy it).

7 “All Summer” Themes  People often bully others because they are different. People often bully those they envy.  Something that starts out as a harmless joke/prank can end up in tragedy.  We often perform uncharacteristically bad actions when we are in a group because we want to be a part of the group.

8 THEME  Guilt will damper a person’s happiness.
