The citadel was used as the seat of the king and his government in Egypt for many centuries and many dynasties including the Ayyubids, the Mamluks, and even some Ottomans ruled over Egypt from the Citadel.

It was the first mosque built in Fatimid Cairo and the first theological college, And has played a continuous role in the history of the city from its foundation to the present day. The mosque of c Amr, though important as Islam’s first mosque in Egypt, did not retain its role though the centuries.

It was the cemetery for Memphis, the capital of Ancient Egypt, yet it is still one of the virgin archaeological sites, despite the fact that so much has already been found here! The site is dominated by the Step Pyramid of King Zoser, which goes back to 2700 BC. It is one of the oldest stone structures in the world!
