6 LMHS IS THE PLACE TO ACHIEVE  Nearly half of last year’s seniors graduated with honors.  Each year approximately 30 colleges and universities visit our campus to meet your student.  Lake Sumter State College and Lake Tech. have FREE APPLICATION DAYS for seniors during the school day this year.  Last year, nearly $200,000 in community scholarships were awarded to seniors. Counselors helped students WIN in order to continue their education.  Hawks have won or placed highly in writing contests sponsored by Lake County.  Last year, over 33% of students passed their AP Exam.  Last year, 100% of students who took AP Spanish passed their exam.  This year, LMHS offers 20 AP courses in a variety of subjects.  Last year, 3 seniors graduated High School and earned their Associates Degree from LSSC at graduation.  Last year, 1 senior completed two certificate programs at Lake Tech and earned multiple awards at competition.

13 Bright Futures – What you should know...  Bright Futures Requirements are listed on Page 24 in the HAWK HANDBOOK or online at www.floridastudentfinancialaid.org/ssfad/bfwww.floridastudentfinancialaid.org/ssfad/bf  The application opens December 1 st of their senior year. This year seniors will complete the application December 7 th & 8 th through their social studies class.  Students must take ACT or SAT tests to qualify.  Students need to earn Volunteer hours right now. Don’t wait for their senior year. Volunteer form is available in our website: http://lake.k12.fl.us/lmh; click on Guidance; click formshttp://lake.k12.fl.us/lmh  The scholarships are reviewed every year by the state, so things can be changed.  The amount of the scholarship is not enough to pay full tuition at any college. Students need to apply for additional scholarships.

14 When should your child take ACT or SAT?  Spring of your child’s junior year (December -June 2016)  Register ONLINE to take ACT (see printout)  Current juniors will take the new redesigned SAT on March 2 nd 2016 for free.  Colleges require one of the entrance exams (some majors might require you to take SAT)  During your senior year can retake the exams if you want to improve your scores.

16 TIPS FOR PARENTS  After each report card or progress sit with your child to see if your child is meeting a realistic academic goals. Come up with different options to make improvements.  Know the dates for progress and report cards come out (page 6). If you don’t see a report card, call the school and request a copy.  Encourage your student to be involved in the school (many clubs are available)  Work together with us to meet your student’s goals.  Monitor your student’s social media activities (less drama)  Create an account with www.schoology.com and you will ACCESS to your student’s teachers’ lesson plans and our scholarships information.  Create a Skyward account to view your child’s grades (yes 12 th graders need to be monitored as well)

17 TIPS FOR PARENTS  HAWK GUIDE PAGE 8-12 WILL GIVE YOU AN OVERVIEW WHAT YOU AND YOUR CHILD SHOULD BE DONE EACH YEAR.  HELP THEM WITH THEIR POSTSECONDARY OPTIONS (COLLEGE, MILITARY, OR TECHNICAL SCHOOL).  SCHEDULE COLLEGE TOURS WITH YOUR CHILD.  ASK QUESTIONS AND SCHEDULE A MEETING WITH YOUR CHILD’S COUNSELOR  DON’T WAIT FOR THEIR SENIOR TO SEE IF THEY ARE ON TRACK.

20 NCAA Eligibility Requirements 16 Core Classes are requirements 10 of those core classes must be complete by the 7 th semester (the end of their junior year) and must be in English, Math, or Natural Physical Science.  Students must present a corresponding test score and core-course GPA on the sliding scale.  SAT :critical reading and math sections.  ACT: English, math, reading and science sections. Enter 9999 during ACT/SAT registration so the clearinghouse will be able to receive your scores.  Register at www.eligibilitycenter.org by the end of your junior year.www.eligibilitycenter.org
