MOTIVATION  Garage door openers aren't exactly revolutionary tech, being invented by C.G. Johnson in 1926. However I was leaving for work one morning and couldn’t remember if I left my garage door open or not. Fortunately, I was still in our neighborhood so I was able to do a quick double check before I would be late for work. 3

 The Raspberry Pi seemed like a better choice for this project than the Arduino, because it was more robust and easier to use.  From the information I gathered, using a Raspberry Pi connected to the garage door that can open it via the browser seemed to be a simple and sound method.  The project is relatively inexpensive and doesn't require an unapproachable level of skill to assemble. 4 INTRODUCTION

 Have your ever drove out of your garage and after few minutes into your drive, feared you did not close the door?  Or perhaps need to let a trusted repair man into your home and could not be there at that time?  Did you ever feel the need to check the status of your garage door from maybe your office? 5 PROBLEM STATEMENT

Hardware/software  A standard garage door system operated with a wall button.  Raspian OS installed on a SD card. Knowledge  Basic understanding of electrical circuits.  Moderate understanding of programing languages and computer systems. 6 Assumptions

Turn a raspberry pi and smart phone into a garage door opener for increased convenience and security  Interfacing to the garage door controller through a relay module  Connected to the GPIO header of the Raspberry Pi 7 PROPOSED SOLUTION

 A magnetic switch provides proof of the door position 8

 Programed using python  Install the python twisted module - sudo apt-get install python-twisted  Install the controller application - sudo apt-get install subversion  Download python coding and configuration files - svn co https://github.com/andrewshilliday/garage-door- controller/trunk ~pi/garage-door-controller 9

RESULTS  It was very important to test for continuity of the magnetic switch and relays to insure proper functionality  WebIOPi framework allowed me to see feedback from the input and control the outputs manually  When the page is open in your web browser, it should display the button for the garage door configured in your config.json file, along with the current status of the door  Each click will be as if you pressed the garage button once. 10

 It works quite well over local Wi-Fi connection.  Some additional work needs to be done to add in authentication to the web page  The project itself followed the anticipated time required.  For all intended purposes this project has been a moderate success. 12 CONCLUSIONS

FUTURE WORK  Establish secure connection from outside local network  Beet Box: capacitive touch device.. presented to HS tour  Got RPi2 in the mail yesterday  Desktop arcade 13
