K EY Q UESTIONS We already know that we should ask: How were the data produced? What exactly was measured? We should also use number sense Ask if the numbers make sense.

H OW DO WE KNOW ? What didn’t they tell us? Missing information Are the numbers consistent with each other? Look for inconsistencies Are the numbers plausible? Look for implausible numbers (surprisingly large or small) Are the numbers too good to be true? Look for numbers too regular or agree too well with hypothesis Is the arithmetic right? Is there a hidden agenda?
