5 Impressionism Painting movement that began in France in the mid 1800’s. Focuses on light, shadow, and color more than exact shapes. Influenced by photography, the Industrial revolution, and Japanese prints.

7 Photography’s effect on Impressionism No longer a need to capture strict realism Photography was the popular choice for portraits

9 Japanese prints’ impact on Impressionism JP were very popular in Paris at the time. They capture the moment. Not strictly realistic. They were accepted even though they are not in the accepted European style. This gave the impressionists the boldness to go a new direction in hopes they too would find acceptance in the future.

10 Industrial Revolution

11 Industrial Revolution’s impact on Impressionism Made available new pigments and paint types. Produced a more wealthy upper class with money to spend on paintings. (After Impressionism gained popularity)

13 Claude Monet, Waterlilies Monet – known for fuzzy forms and breaking down objects into all of their colors. For example: a tree that most people would see as merely green, Monet would look closely to see green, yellow, brown, and orange leaves with shadows of blue, purple, and red.

14 Post-Impressionism Movement that spread through Europe in the late 1800’s. Influenced by the bright colors and visible brush strokes of Impressionism, but chose to use clearly defined shapes rather than fuzzy outlines.

23 Impressionist / Post imp. box You will create a box then add sculpture to the box. The sculpture will be inspired by an impressionist or post-impressionist painting.

24 Requirements of the Box Rectangle box with 3x6” base. 3” tall Slab built with support coils added to inside corners. Add on trees, buildings, fences, animals, etc. as seen on your chosen painting. Carve on areas of background. Sculpture must go from sides onto lid. Sculpture should extend beyond the edges of the box. TEXTURE of sculpture and surface should match the style of the painting Cut off style lid. Painted to match actual painting.

26 Research 1.Search the internet for your artist + paintings. 2. Print a color picture or save on your phone a painting that you like. 3. Consider the images in the picture will be sculpted and added to your box. 4. MAKE SURE that the picture is actually painted by the artist!!!

27 sketching Draw the 4 sides of the box full size. 2 sides are 6x3” 2 sides are 3x3” On each side sketch portions of the painting. Include major features that will become sculpture: trees, mountains, clouds, animals, etc. Sketch items extending off of the top and sides. Don’t worry about the top. Sculptures from the side will extend up onto the top.

29 Journal 10/11/10 Get out your box and look at it closely to answer the following: 1.List 3 specific places you can still see the orange of the clay. 2.What stage of painting are you currently on? Base coating or top coating? 3.What are the next three specific areas you need to paint? 4.What areas do you need to improve the painting that you already did?
