1.When planning a course, one should consider four important elements: goals, materials, methods, and evaluation.

PSTDP CLASS REVISON 2.Snow says the method is important when directing a course.

PSTDP CLASS REVISON 3.Goals are the results or outcomes the teacher hopes students will achieve in their language learning.

PSTDP CLASS REVISON 4.Building students’ language skills means helping them learn how to be more effective language learners.

PSTDP CLASS REVISON 5.Building language knowledge and language skill goals are more important to teachers and students than building language learning skills and motivational goals.

PSTDP CLASS REVISON 6.For any course you teach, it is important to consider the kinds of goals you want to reach.

PSTDP CLASS REVISON 7. When setting goals, teachers should be attentive to their context.

PSTDP CLASS REVISON 8.Teachers should help students establish mainly general long-term goals, for they help learners see their progress and feel that they are moving forward.

PSTDP CLASS REVISON 9.Time constraints often demand that teachers choose what to stress in their classes, so it is best to help students choose a set of English skills and knowledge they want to improve.

PSTDP CLASS REVISON 10.In EFL setting where opportunities to use English are quite few, one of the main challenges faced by the English teachers is how to motivate students in their English study.

PSTDP CLASS REVISON 11.While many students are initially interested in learning English, it is not unusual for their enthusiasm to disappear over time, partly because learning a foreign language involves hard work.

PSTDP CLASS REVISON 12. Students generally need to persist in studying English just for a few years before they reach a skill level that allows them to comfortably watch a film, read a book, or chat with a foreigner in English.

PSTDP CLASS REVISON Look at picture. Identify the classroom issue. You have two minutes to give three tips or pass to another team.

PSTDP CLASS REVISON Role Play activity Decide on which goals to focus in these teaching situations

PSTDP CLASS REVISON You’re teaching a general English course in order to improve the English of a group of high school students. They have a required textbook that contains dialogs, readings, comprehension questions, and mini projects. They meet twice a week for one and a half hourss per session. What should be your goals for the course? How much freedom do you have in setting the goals for this course?

PSTDP CLASS REVISON You’re teaching a group of grade eight learners who have a very low level of English. They will need to take a test at the end of the year which will decide where they will study for high school. This test is heavily based in reading and answering questions. There is a small task for writing short answers, but no speaking. What are your goals for this class?

PSTDP CLASS REVISON You’re teaching a course for middle-aged scholars who are preparing to go abroad to Western Universities in order to participate in research projects, working in international teams for which English is to be the main working langugage. Most students have a cosiderable experience reading and translating English but very marginal speaking and listening skills. There is no textbook and no tests other than those you choose to set.

PSTDP CLASS REVISON Textbook Advantages & Disadvantages

PSTDP CLASS REVISON Advantage or Disadvantage It facilitates students’ study and review

PSTDP CLASS REVISON Advantage or Disadvantage Relying on a textbook tends to emphasize the knowledge of English grammar and vocabulary

PSTDP CLASS REVISON Advantage or Disadvantage Textbooks provide continuity to the course, thus keeping the activities fairly related to one another.

PSTDP CLASS REVISON Advantage or Disadvantage Moving page by page through a textbook has little power to engage students’ interest.

PSTDP CLASS REVISON Hand in Journals and Portfolios to be checked. Any final Questions?

PSTDP CLASS REVISON Good Luck on the test!

PSTDP CLASS REVISON BREAK TIME!
