2 CURRENT SITUATION: Companies wanting to build a pipeline down the valley of the Mackenzie River to bring the gas and oil to southern markets. Native communities feared the pipeline would interfere with the migration of the caribou herds. The caribou remains for Native communities an important source of food & the hunt is an essential, defining event of their cultures. Also most animals are being killed which is a big problem.

3 DESIRED OUTCOME: Reduce hunting, trapping & killing of the wildlife & destruction of habitats. Any future energy development or pipeline to be done with the agreement of the Native peoples.

4 PROPOSED ACTION & GUIDELINES: The people & community have cut down on the hunting, trapping & killing but there are some people that are still doing it. They have also have been more careful with the mining.

5 DID YOU KNOW?: *The Mackenzie River is Canada’s longest river & is North America’s second longest ( one thousand, seven hundred and thirty-eight kilometres!) second longest ( one thousand, seven hundred and thirty-eight kilometres!) *The estuary is a calving area for Beluga whales!! *Once the Mackenzie River was called the Disappointment River!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
