DiGeorge Syndrome By: Patrick Heou

History The DiGeorge Syndrome was discovered by an Italian-American physician and pediatric endocrinologist by the name of Angelo Digeorge who, if you haven’t found the connection yet, named the DiGeorge Syndrome after his own last name. Digeorge discovered this syndrome in 1965 while he was still The Director of the Pediatric Clinical Research Center and The Chief of Endocrinology and Metabolism. He has sadly since passed away on October 11, 2009 due to kidney failure.

Etiology When someone appears to have DiGeorge Syndrome, they will usually have a problem with one of their chromosomes, specifically chromosome 22 where a region on chromosome 22 is deleted, this region is called 22q11.2. This deletion of 22q11.2 usually happens in random events that occur inside of the father’s sperm or the mother’s egg, an event that rarely happens is that the deletion is passed down onto the child.

Symptoms When someone has DiGeorge Syndrome they might have some problems, like there might be a cleft in their lip causing speech and language problems, hearing problems in their ears or loss, heart diseases, learning difficulties, and even more problems People with this syndrome will most likely have learning difficulties and palatal abnormalities more than other problems

Diagnosis When you check out someone with DiGeorge Syndrome, you may notice that that person will have some problems, like his/her heart will have a disease, their brain has a problem where he/she has learning difficulties, or the most easiest way of telling, you can check out the person’s facial features and see if they have any problems with their mouth, their ears, or sometimes their eyes

Treatment Although there is no cure yet for DiGeorge Syndrome, there are ways you can prevent a person with this syndrome from having a critical problem, you can maintain that person’s calcium level, you can get that person surgery for any sort of facial problems or if their heart or any other vital organ has a defect in it, or you can get that person a therapist who can help that person with his speech and language.

Prognosis Even though that there is no cure for DiGeorge Syndrome, I am willing to say that there will be a cure for DiGeorge Syndrome in the (near) future, as this syndrome is the cause of most people’s life being almost ruined, and I also hope that there will be a way to prevent DiGeorge Syndrome from appearing in anyone!
