Year 7 Coat Hook Project (Woodwork & Metalwork) Design & Technology Information Here are the key dimensions for the components you are making. This design uses a very basic hook design. It is expected that you will develop a more interesting design based on the size limitation mentioned below. These are the dimensions from which your design should be generated. All holes should be drilled along the centre lines as indicated. Centre Line

Year 7 Coat Hook Project (Metalwork) Information You need to design the mounting plate for the aluminium coat hook. Shapes should be kept to simple geometric designs; for example parts of circles, hexagons, or triangles. You should use 2D DESIGN to produce the drawing required in the production of the hook. You will need to remember NOT to alter the hook part of the shape. Draw the template accurately, and make 12 copies of it. Your designs should be within the 50 x 50 square ‘backplate’ area. Once this is complete you will need to discuss your ideas with your teacher and choose which one to take forward to manufacture. Design & Technology

Year 7 Coat Hook Project (Metalwork) Design & Technology Homework Use this sheet to produce some hand drawn ideas for your coat hook. You should produce at least 4 designs. NAME

Year 7 Coat Hook Project (Metalwork) Research Using the text book provided (Collins Design & Realisation) please complete the missing information in the table below: Design & Technology Name: Ferrous MetalProperties and characteristicsUses Mild steel Catering & surgical equipment. Hard skin and a brittle soft core. Name: Non-Ferrous MetalProperties and characteristicsUses Aluminium Central heating systems Corrosion resistant, good conductor of heat & electricity NAME

Year 7 Coat Hook Project (Woodwork) Research Using the text book provided (Collins Design & Realisation) please complete the missing information in the table below: Design & Technology Name: SoftwoodProperties and characteristics Uses Scotts pine General indoor work, white wood furniture. Lightweight, soft straight silky grain. Name: HardwoodProperties and characteristics Uses Oak Indoor furniture and panelling Hard, very strong and durable. Name Manufactured boardProperties and characteristics Uses Plywood Medium density Fibreboard Chip board NAME

Year 7 Coat Hook Project (Woodwork & Metalwork) Design & Technology Evaluation Being able to evaluate your work and personal performance is a key skill in Design & Technology. It allows you to take a step back and look at what you have achieved and to decide what you did well and what you could improve upon. This makes evaluation particularly useful as a means of improving your work and performance in the next project you undertake. In order for your evaluation to be useful there are several key areas you need to cover. ☻ Does your product look/function as intended? ☻ Have you made any changes to the design as a result of problems that occurred during manufacture and could these have been avoided? ☻ Which aspect of the project did you find most challenging/rewarding and why? ☻ If you could go back and make changes to your design what would you change and why? ☻ Have you asked anyone else there opinion about you product? If so what did they say? How to lay out your evaluation ☻ Be aware that your work is marked not just on its contents but on its presentation as well. You should therefore use a computer and appropriate software application (namely Microsoft Word or PowerPoint) to produce your work. ☻ Where appropriate use diagrams and sketches to illustrate your points. This is especially appropriate when you are showing changes to your design. ☻ The best means of presenting an idea is through a combination of text (annotation) and graphics. ☻ Use headings and sub headings to divide your evaluation up into easy to understand sections which relate to the points mentioned above. ☻ Remember that there is always room for improvement and that your first attempt, however good, is a prototype and not a saleable product.
