3 Mathematical Topics – Place value – Multiplying whole numbers, decimals, and fractions – Dividing whole numbers (single and double digit), decimals, and fractions – Exploring numerical patterns and relationships (building blocks of Algebra) – Introduction of volume and exploration of three dimensional figures – Classifying plane figures and coordinate Geometry – Data and Measurement

4 Examples of New Topics Explored – Two digit divisors – Extension of algorithms for decimal operations – Operations with Fractions (including mixed numbers and unlike denominators) – Exploring relationship between fractions and division – Three dimensional Geometry – The coordinate grid

5 Mathematical Topics – Basic Algebra and equations (including an introduction to graphing equations) – Extension of fraction and operations and review of decimal operations – Introduction to integers (focus on magnitude) – Ratios, rates, and proportions – Percents – Perimeter, area, volume, and surface area – Measurement, – Data and graphs – Introduction to probability

6 Examples of New Topics Explored – Mastery of multiplication, division and fractions lead to study of ratios, proportional relationships, and unit rates. – Introduction of variables, algebraic expressions, and algebraic equations. – Extend understanding of place value to include both positive and negative numbers. – Deeper examination of surface area. – Introduction of variability measures in data and other statistical measurements

7 Pre-Algebra: Broken into Three Categories – Algebra Writing, solving, and graphing equations and inequalities Introduction of operations with integers Broaden the study of proportional reasoning – Geometry Two and three dimensional Integrate Algebra into Geometric studies – Applications Percents Probability Data Analysis

8 Algebra 1 – Review of data analysis and probability. – Review of operations with all rational numbers. – Extend exploration and understanding of equations and inequalities. – Introduction of study of linear and non-linear functions and function notation. – Exploration of systems of equations and inequalities. – Extend understandings of exponent rules learned in Pre-Algebra to polynomials. – Exploration of factoring polynomials. – Introduction of quadratic functions and equations.

10 All 4 th and 6 th graders assessed in May. SCAT test administered to those who score higher than 80% Final decisions for placement allows administrative discretion. Parents notified of results if their child qualifies. Parental consent requested. Item analysis available from the math curriculum leader upon request.

11 Criteria for Acceleration Past 5 th Grade Math and Placement in 6 th Grade Mathematics as a 5 th Grade Student Phase 1: Score at least 80% on assessment over 5 th grade topics. Phase 2: Take the SCAT test from Johns Hopkins to measure aptitude. At least 90 th percentile. Other Considerations: Should be recommended by 4 th grade teachers. Other teachers who have worked with the student throughout the year will also be consulted. Data from PSSA (or other state assessments if the student has moved into the district), Terra Nova, or other external assessments the student has taken

12 Criteria for Acceleration Past 6 th Grade Math and Placement in Pre-Algebra as a 6 th Grade Student Phase 1: Students must be recommended for testing by their fifth grade mathematics teacher. Phase 2: Score at least 80% on assessment over 5 th grade topics. Phase 3: Take the SCAT test from Johns Hopkins to measure aptitude. At least 90 th percentile. Data from PSSA (or other state assessments if the student has moved into the district), Terra Nova, or other external assessments the student has taken will be considered.

13 Criteria for Acceleration Past Pre-Algebra and Placement in Algebra as a 7 th Grade Student Phase 1: Score at least 80% on assessment over Pre-Algebra topics. Phase 2: Take the SCAT test from Johns Hopkins to measure aptitude. At least 90 th percentile. Other Considerations: Should be recommended by 6 th grade teachers. Other teachers who have worked with the student throughout the year will also be consulted. Data from PSSA (or other state assessments if the student has moved into the district), Terra Nova, or other external assessments the student has taken

14 Criteria for Two-Year Acceleration Must already be accelerated one year. Must be recommended by their accelerated mathematics teacher to take the assessment. Must score at least 80% on an assessment over the course they are to accelerate through. External assessment data will be considered, and the student’s SCAT testing scores are reviewed.

15 Criteria for Enrichment – Chapter by chapter – Pre-Test to determine prior knowledge – Rate of acquisition as determined by teacher observations What is Enrichment? – Depth not compacting topics – Five-Year Evolution Packets and Worksheets to Projects Pulled out with math resource teacher to integration with regular classroom teacher Role of the iPads in the growth of enrichment

16 Criteria for Enrichment – Topic by Topic – Pre-Test to determine prior knowledge – Rate of acquisition as determined by teacher observations Differences between Boyce and Fort Couch Enrichment – Because of 75 minute periods enrichment can be offered for individual lessons if students finish a lesson early. – Students check in with the math resource teacher once per rotation at Boyce. Students check in via email and as needed at Fort Couch. – No projects at Boyce…yet.
