2010/12/14 Caltech Massimo Benettoni FDIRC FBox (almost) ready for production Box design finalized (as possible) Gives precise Fblock positioning wrt guiding rails, by precise machining and measuring of block position (references) wrt bearings. Gas tight assembly by means of gasket, no glue to allow easy and fast dismounting Box design allows PMTs rows to slide aside for decoupling (assuming PMTs coupled to quartz with optical grease) Pinholes as references for PMTs and PCB boards PMTs assembly by "horizontal strips” (8 PMTs each): compatible with PCB "vertical" boards assembly? Pattern of threaded and reference holes to fix items not defined/available yet: PCBs support, case for cooling, Fbox to bbox sealing Holes for lifting and handling Hole for fiber entering for test

2010/12/14 Caltech Massimo Benettoni FDIRC Fbox assembly procedure (clean room @ SLAC) FBlock on top back plate, gasket Side plates, “top” references on Fblock top wedge Front bar+ side push buttons Bottom C-shape enclosure Push buttons (belleville spring) on front bar and bottom enclosure

2010/12/14 Caltech Massimo Benettoni FDIRC FBox sealing gasket, sealing to barbox Flat EPDM gasket 4x12 mm between box plates, to avoid risks of air trapped in the Oring grooves EPDM Cord d.10 mm between alu plates and quartz (around PMTs window) Sealing to barbox Very tight space between adjacent barboxes Very tight space between barbox front frame and Fblock wedge Still working out how to close the Fbox to the barbox, at this stage will leave clean flange around wedge E.g: Sealing on barbox "head" perimetral surfaces: fine for CRT test, not solving superB setup (clearance between adjacent barboxes 2mm) Sealing to front surface of barbox head: very tight space between screws and frame and wedge of Fblock: would require to remove screws sticking out from front frame (at least on corners, where frame to Fblock 0.8 mm)

2010/12/14 Caltech Massimo Benettoni FDIRC Sealing to barbox

2010/12/14 Caltech Massimo Benettoni FDIRC Shopping list ready for order Alcoa Alca Plus plate t.10mm, 2 m 2 Alcoa Alca Plus plate t.20 mm, 1 m 2 Alcoa Alca Plus plate t.70&100 mm, 2x0.25 m 2 Anticorodal plate 50x30, 6m Anticorodal U extruded profile 50x50x5 Alcoa Alca Plus plate t=12mm, 2 m 2 Anticorodal plate t=10 mm, 2 m 2 square extruded profile 100x100x4 mm EPDM sheet 4mm, 1x1.5 m EPDM cord 70shore ø10 and 12mm 10+10m n° 3 wheel bearings ø 40 mm (ssteel) n° 30 EPDM ORINGs, various dimensions n° 2 linear bearing ø 25 mm (ssteel) Belleville springs øe 14 øi 7,2 Sp. 0,5 cyl rail bars ø25 x 4 m, steel Include “all” material for box and some alu plates possibly useful for support. Grandtotal of about 3k€, order going to be issued by next week

2010/12/14 Caltech Massimo Benettoni FDIRC PCB boards mounting vs pMTs partitioning Baeline up to now optical grease for PMT optical contact PCB FE boards plugging as into “crate slots” Assuming need of optical grease, PMTs partitioned by rows, 8 elements each rows (or part of rows) can slide aside for PMTs replacing, useful cause optical contact made by grease PCBs and backplane(s) partitioned in columns must be removed “completely” (depending on PCBs partition and # of PMTs removed) PCB mounting requirements for CRT test ?

2010/12/14 Caltech Massimo Benettoni FDIRC Contact to quartz with PET buttons (e.g. Arnite TM )

2010/12/14 Caltech Massimo Benettoni FDIRC Fbox support for CRT test

2010/12/14 Caltech Massimo Benettoni FDIRC Fbox support for CRT test : specifications No deformation under load (even during Fbox sliding) must allow barbox head passing trough support (two halves back flange to be inserted inside the support to fix the barbox to them after box insertion). Must allow free (as possible) access to the gluing area May be used to simulate the SuperB setup (e.g. accessability, gluing before complete insertion..) Alignment strategy to be defined, e.g.: –Align barbox and support to CRT: how, precision –Vertical alignment by barbox adjustable shimming or support shimming (one adjustment by shimming after measuring of both) Relative position of barbox head and support rails must be measured before Fbox insertion (how? e.g. measuring arm)

2010/12/14 Caltech Massimo Benettoni FDIRC Fbox support for CRT test: specifications must be aligned to the CRT structure (any precise reference on it?) barbox must be aligned to CRT structure (parallel to trolley movement, optical and mechanical tolerances) Alignment strategy to be defined, e.g.: –Vertical alignment by barbox adjustable shimming or support shimming (one adjustment after measuring of both) –Align barbox and support to CRT: how, tools, precision Relative position of barbox head and support rails must be measured before Fbox insertion (how? Tools?) The group of Bari going to take care of design and production of the support

2010/12/14 Caltech Massimo Benettoni FDIRC Fbox and support schedule update Preliminary workshop drawings ready, to be refined according to check and approval Not everything is fully defined but main parts could start Part production could begin late January (as soon as we get material) Part production February – March (! coincidence with major workshop restoration/reharsal in Padova!) Very likely to order machining of some/all items to external company Parts still to work out to be defined and produced: sealing to bbox, PMTs and PCB frames Measures and trial assembly April Shipping end April / May Assembly at Slac; May Need check and approval of model asap Support frame schedule … some delay wrt Fbox? to be seen with Jerry and Nicola M.
