2 A Turbulent Decade Presidential Campaign poster for Warren Harding using the “Return to normalcy” slogan. The rich wanted to reduce the chances for laborers to make money and improve the quality of life. Child labor was encouraged to save wage costs. Scandal of corrupt government officials stole money and make deals to increase their wealth and did not support the working class people of the United states. This corruption led to loss of jobs, and the 1929 stock market crash.

3 A Turbulent Decade Strange Fruit- Southern trees bear strange fruit, Blood on the leaves and blood at the root, Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze, Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees. Pastoral scene of the gallant south, The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth, Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh, Then the sudden smell of burning flesh. Here is fruit for the crows to pluck, For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck, For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop Here is a strange and bitter crop

4 The Jazz Age Langston Hughes Dreams Hold fast to dreams For if dreams die Life is a broken-winged bird That cannot fly. Hold fast to dreams For when dreams go Life is a barren field Frozen with snow.

5 The Great Depression Real Betty Boop Madame Niore Al Capone-Chicago Bumpy Elwood Johnson – Harlem NY Both were gangsters who were prominent during the depression. They both provided food for the hungry with programs to feed the poor when the U. S. government could not.

6 The New Deal President Roosevelt created this project to: Motivate the country to improve the ecomony Get people working again

7 Movies  The Cinderella Man, released in 2005- Starring Russell Crow  Time is 1933 in the depression and ex boxer champion’ Jim Braddock’ fights to support his family and became the heavy weight boxing champion of the world  The movie shows how Braddock had to look for day work and beg for money from his “former friends” in the boxing sports.  Day work consisted of going to street corners and meeting men who were hiring for the day. The wages averaged only $1 a day or less
