Cells & Cell Functions Chapter 1 Section 1

An Overview of Cells  Cells-Make up and carry out functions of living things.  Functions-Allow living things to stay alive and reproduce.  Microscope-An instrument that allows small objects to look bigger.  Simple Microscope-Has one lens  Compound Microscope-Has more than one lens.

Inventors  Robert Hooke-One of the first people to observe (look at) cells. He did this using a compound microscope. (What is a compound microscope?) He observed a small piece of cork and thought the empty spaces in the cork looked like tiny rectangular rooms. So he named the empty spaces cells, a word meaning “small rooms”.

 Anton van Leeuvenhoek-He observed one celled organisms which he found in lake water, scrapings from teeth and gums, and water from rain gutters. (Ewwwwwww)  Scleiden, Schwann, & Virchow- These 3 German scientists, along with others, developed the cell theory.

The Cell Theory States 1.) All living things are made up of cells. 2.) Cells are the basic units of structure and function in living things. (Every living thing is made of cells and they help to make sure those living things work like they are suppose to.) 3.) All cells are produced from other cells. (All cells are made from other cells)

Light and Electron Microscopes  There are two types of microscopes: Light and Electron Microscopes  To magnify is make larger. (Like a magnifying glass.) Lenses in the light microscope magnify an object by bending the light that passes through them. The lens is curved, a curved lens is call a convex lens. (Go to pg. 12&13)  The more lenses the more magnification.  Single Lens=Simple Microscope  More than 1 Lens=Compound Microscope

These grains of pollen are seen at 1000X magnification under an electron microscope.

Microscope Info.  Resolution-The sharpness of the image. (How clear the picture is.)  Electron Microscopes-Use a beam of electrons instead of light to produce a magnified image.  Electrons-Are tiny particles that are smaller than atoms.  Electron Microscopes-Allow you to see much smaller objects than light microscopes. (The resolution is much better.)
