Let’s find out what just happened. Let’s learn more about pragmatics.

Pragmatics Studies the factors that affect the language in social interactions. Focuses on the “speech acts.” Speech Acts are utterances. It is felt that the things we say are equal to actions. ie., Goal! Studies the factors that affect the language in social interactions. Focuses on the “speech acts.” Speech Acts are utterances. 69 People who use AAC report… that their communication partners do not engage then in honest and authentic interactions.

Partners may… Pretend to understand them when they do not. Avoid interacting beyond a simple greeting and small talk. Finish their utterances without asking permission. Fail to confirm the accuracy of the messages exchanged. (Blackstone, 2009) Pretend to understand them when they do not. Avoid interacting beyond a simple greeting and small talk. 71 Partners may… Use “baby talk” when interacting with an older child or adult. Shout because they assume someone who doesn’t speak must be hearing impaired. Ignore nonverbal modes of communication, insisting the child “use his board or device” and so on. Use “baby talk” when interacting with an older child or adult. 72 Pragmatics …Remember to Look at the person speakingGive them the time to create their speech act Respond appropriately to the pragmatic piece of what they are saying. Respond in kind

Pragmatics How much do the augmentative communicator use non-verbals? Does the augmentative communicator display a range of feelings on their face? Is the augmentative communication user allowed to fully express their ideas? Allow the augmentative communicator ample time to create their thoughts.

Strategies to think about…

Hope we gave you something to think about Just the beginning… Not really the end! Just the beginning… Not really the end!
